I think the fan also was the greenish-gray engine color as manufactured.

Greenish gray? The correct engine color is dark blue-gray. \:D \:D \:D

All the 1934 & 35 literature (over 25 sales and engineering books) as well as the GM new car photo's at Milford Proving ground I have show the fan blades to be the same shade as the horn, generator, etc. All the new replacement NOS Chevrolet blades are painted black that I have seen & bought. The water pump & pulley are gray engine color. My Canadian (Maple Leaf 2 ton & Chev 1/2 and 1 1/2, Belgian, German books all show the same color.

I will agree that all the published pictures show a engine colored fan blade (black and white pictures) and that replacement fans were black -but I have never seen an engine gray fan on a car in this area....and they can't all have replacement fans.Same for the road draft tube.Thru the years both colors have been accepted for judging at any meets I have been to.

Don't forget Chevgene's first rule.

When in doubt, paint it black!

Remember black, white and gray are not colors so they can never be incorrect

Oh,Oh it seems to me as artist and from science class white is a color, in fact, it is a combination of all the colors. Black was the absence of all color. The only thing that is going to save you it's not true in paint pigment.

Question -if white is a combination of all colors-and all colors are "darker" than white-what makes the combination of all colors change to white which is the lightest of all colors?????Isn't white the absence of color ??

First, you have to separate what types of color you are talking about: Light and Pigment.

When discussing "light" colors, the color that is reflected is the color you see. So for example, if you have a blue hat, all the colors are absorbed, except for blue. The color blue is reflecting off the object and back to your eye....so therefore, you "see" blue. White light is created when all the colors are reflected back to your eye and none are absorbed. Black light (which is an oxymoron because it is absence of light) is when all the colors are absorbed into the object and none are reflected back to your eye...so you don't "see" anything. Therefore, you cannot see any colors. No light=darkness. So technically, according to light theory, White is a color (all the colors reflected) and black is not (all the colors absorbed).

As for pigments (i.e. paint) black and white are both colors. Black pigments can exist by the mixing of other colors (if black wasn't a color, then how can the hue exist?) And white, although no other colors are mixed, can be created by itself. So both, when dealing with pigments, are colors and exist.

I hope that clears up any confusion! ;\) \:D \:D \:D

Let reason. The pulley is dark blue-gray (or greenish-gray - whatever) and the pulley is held in place by bolts through the fan. It makes sense that the fan and pulley were assembled to the engine as was the draft tube and them the whole thing was painted dark blue-gray (or greenish gray - whatever). \:D

I know its a horse of a different color but the 1937 and up had black fans and breather tubes....and they were attached in the same mannor....and how was the "back" of the fan painted when it was so close to the engine.???

Wow, a dog that sees colors! and also knows why he sees colors of which wave lengths, now I am really impressed. Hey JunkYardDogJunkYardDog could you lend me a couple of five spots so I can get some crayons in 254 colors!

Chev Nut of course the original fan was painted engine color but the guys on the assembly line messed up the fans putting the engines in the chassis and they had to replace the fan with one from "parts" on final inspection!

Contrary to popular belief, Junkyard Dogs are not color blind...at least this gnarly mutt isn't! ;\)

So, for the sake of argument if the bolts that hold the fan in place are painted engine color, then was the fan itself painted on or off the car? \:D \:D

White is the absence of all color.....

Black is the 'combination' of all colors....

There is no 'greenish-gray.'

Chevy's 'blue' is a medium blue.

Painted parts are painted on all 'sides' before they are assembled.

Bill.

Getting back to the fan & engine color. Most of the US engines were built in Flint, MI and then sent to the assembly plants. I doubt very much that they were shipped with a fan blade installed primary due to space & shipping damage problems. Same goes for the draft tube; these parts were assembled either before or after the engine was installed at the assembly factory. This process is still the same at GM; the only fully dressed engines I've seen shipped are one of kind show engines

The draft tube on the 1935/36 motors was installed at the same time the oil pan was put on. There's a bracket on the draft tube that is held in place via one of the oil pan bolts.

The fan, pully and water pump were all installed before the engine was painted, so they should be engine color. I have factory photos showing it this way.

When was the generator pulley painted? I understand that the generator was black and the generator pulley was engine color.

Mike is there any way you could post those factory photo's showing the engine assembly especially showing the fan installation. That would sure clear a lot of the painting questions for all of us; thanks.
