Why are so many engines painted gray when the filling station list black for the correct color for 1934 pickup ? My 36 coupe is grey, is this correct ? Thanks.

The Filling Station does not list black as the engine color for the 1934 pickup in their catalog. Their listing is as follows:

Part number FS-119, 1929-52 Dark gray engine enamel - quart.

The only black listed is for the manifolds (high heat paint) and for the chassis. Both paints are from Bill Hirsch.

The engine in the 1934 pickup was painted Dark-blue gray and so was the engine in your 1936 coupe. \:D \:D \:D \:D

I have owned an original unrestored 34 master Holden body for 30 years. It was a one owner very low mileage car and the fan, pully and fan botls and washers are black, they have never been painted over.
I have also pulled apart over 30 34 and 35 std engines and they all had black fans pulleys and bolts
Even though it is a Holden body, the engine was shipped in the chassis

I just bought a low milage 1934 cab & chassis 1PB034946. I just took off the fan blade assembly and low & behold the back side of the fan where it was bolted to the pulley was black; the engine casting is C-14-4. Many parts were painted black and assembled after the engine was painted even though the fasteners were also used to hold the engine parts together.

I have been closely associated with 35 Standards since 1948 and have owned 2,"as new",35 Stds and to date I have never seen anything, including these 2 cars, that would lead me to believe that black could possibly be correct.
On the other hand, those 2 cars both had Master horns. Go figure.
The factory pictures published in the January 1969 G&D include a engine shot that shows clearly these parts to be engine color. Yes, I know these pictures are of the 34 STD but what other reliable "proof" do we have? In a tight spot, one could always put one's thumb over the '34 in the title block when showing the pictures to the judges.
I have seen a lot of irregularies in supposedly, all original cars. The bottom line is that the guys on the assembly line were not concerned about authenticity, just when is lunch or end of shift? In restoration it is what you can prove from "authentic" sources that counts.

I doubt that any of the parts like fans were sent to the GM Assembly in an un-painted or just primed condition, probably a black fan was put on the car then the engine was painted. many of these sheet metal parts were painted by dipping them before they were sorted and shipped.

Several of my uncles and cousins worked in the GM plant on the assembly line in Saint Louis before WWII and after, I heard a lot of their stories about building Chevrolets!

I dug up the old fan blades and vent tubes that I saved from an original 1934 Master and a 1935 Master DeLuxe...all I can see is black paint. One was a StLouis car and one from Janesville...I have the G&D picturs that show the proving grund cars with fans and vents that match the engine color...I would doubt very much if those sheetmetal parts would have been shipped with the engine due to damage concerns...I still have the thoughts that they were not the same color for all assembly plants and depended on the sorce of fans and vents for the plant.

So, the filling station fs- 119 paint is not correct for my 34 pickup ? The experts here asured me it was the right color, I don't think I'll change it now. The FS-119 is so close to black it's hard to tell it from the carb & generator. Thanks

The FS-119 engine paint is correct for all 1929-52 Chevrolets engines and some from 1953 and up.Its a dark gray but will look lighter in the sunlight.

"easy money", please re-read my posting. I mentioned that the Filling Station paint FS-119 IS CORRECT for your pickup. As Chev Nut states, it is dark, but it is not dark enough to be mistaken for black. \:D \:D \:D

Remember that white '55 Cameo we were talking about 4-5-6 weeks ago... ??? The one with the wrong decal on the filter???

I still think the engine was painted the correct color of 'gray.' It just looked 'washed out' from the bright sun and the 'flash.'

Some 'complained' it was too light to be correct. I still don't agree.

Bill.

The down draft tubes at least on the 34-36 trucks do not attach to oil pan. The oil attachement screw behind the generator lower bracket extends up through the oil pan & block flange. The draft tube is attached by a bracket strap that goes down over the screw and is attached with a nut. This allows the draft tube to be installed or removed without distrubing the oil pan attachment. The draft tube on all my truck engine show back paint on them including the caps. I don't have detailed pictures of the car engines showing the draft tube attachments maybe they are different??
