Why are so many engines painted gray when the filling station list black for the correct color for 1934 pickup ? My 36 coupe is grey, is this correct ? Thanks.

Gents I have owned an original unrestored 34 master Holden body for 30 years. It was a one owner very low mileage car and the fan, pully and fan botls and washers are black, they have never been painted over. I have also pulled apart over 30 34 and 35 std engines and they all had black fans pulleys and bolts Even though it is a Holden body, the engine was shipped in the chassis Chris

I have been closely associated with 35 Standards since 1948 and have owned 2,"as new",35 Stds and to date I have never seen anything, including these 2 cars, that would lead me to believe that black could possibly be correct. On the other hand, those 2 cars both had Master horns. Go figure. The factory pictures published in the January 1969 G&D include a engine shot that shows clearly these parts to be engine color. Yes, I know these pictures are of the 34 STD but what other reliable "proof" do we have? In a tight spot, one could always put one's thumb over the '34 in the title block when showing the pictures to the judges. I have seen a lot of irregularies in supposedly, all original cars. The bottom line is that the guys on the assembly line were not concerned about authenticity, just when is lunch or end of shift? In restoration it is what you can prove from "authentic" sources that counts.

I doubt that any of the parts like fans were sent to the GM Assembly in an un-painted or just primed condition, probably a black fan was put on the car then the engine was painted. many of these sheet metal parts were painted by dipping them before they were sorted and shipped. Several of my uncles and cousins worked in the GM plant on the assembly line in Saint Louis before WWII and after, I heard a lot of their stories about building Chevrolets!

So, the filling station fs- 119 paint is not correct for my 34 pickup ? The experts here asured me it was the right color, I don't think I'll change it now. The FS-119 is so close to black it's hard to tell it from the carb & generator. Thanks
