I am getting ready to rebuild the steering box on my 36 1/2 ton. I have adjusted it and it is still too sloppy. I can find a new pitman shaft, but don't know where to find a new steering shaft with the matching gear. I assume both need to be changed to get a tight box. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks Richard

Hi Richard. Are you using the shop manual to adjust the steering box. It is very common for people to try to adjust the gear mesh with the set screw but this only adjusts the end play of the pitman shaft.
With most of this vintage of Chevrolet the steering box gear mesh is adjusted via ecentric screws that move one half of the steering box containing the worm gear in relation to the other half containing the pitman shaft.
