I did not have our 31 at the Anniversary Meet but I looked over the 31s and all their tools on display and I have some questions. In the "Chevrolet Tools" book by Ray Lemasters and Dave Miner it shows a crank for the 1917-1932 with a 3 1/2" loose sleeve handle. All of the 31s and 32s had this crank. None of the cars had a crank with the lug nut wrench on the handle and none of them had the "Wrench, Wire Wheel Hub Bolt Nut # 348905 as listed in the 1931 Master Parts Price List.

If I have tools as displayed how will I remove a wheel with a genuine Chevrolet wrench? I have the Wire Wheel Hub Bolt Nut Wrench but what should I display in the future?

Not to confuse anything here, but my 31, in the tool kit, has the aforementioned lug wrench/crank handle combo.

Good question on display question. I certainly am NOT qualified to answer your question. I would think, (perhaps common sense), that you would be correct in showing the #348905 unit otherwise it would take 2 seperate tools to remove wheel. I wouldn't think this would be in Chevrolets' line of thinking. But than, I've been wrong a bunch of times.

Just thinking aloud here.

Jim

The best documentation shows 1933 Master to be the first to use the starting crank with lug nut socket on the end. There are a few pictures of what are apparently 1932s with socket end starting cranks but they are not supported by parts books. That would require the wire wheel hub bolt nut wrench in the tool kit for 1930-32 with wire wheels. Those puppies are hard to find so most have never seen one much less have it in their tool display.

Chipper, If I understand what you are saying for me to be correct I should display the crank with the loose sleeve and my wire wheel hub bolt nut wrench. Is that correct?

Jim,
That is correct! Both starting crank and wire wheel lug nut wrench.
