The rookie is back again with another question regarding the master cylinder for my '58 Impala, which has power assisted drum brakes.
My car has either treadle-vac power brakes or moraine power brakes. How can I tell and what do I look for???

The treadle-vac has a stamped steel cover on the master cylinder retained by 4 bolts with fill in the center.
The Moraine master cyl. is a solid casting with a filler in the center.

Thank you the comeback. The master cylinder has the filler cap, with numbers on it, in the center. The power cylinder housing looks to be cast iron bolted(4) to the firewall with line to the vacuum reservior. Does this help to tell wether it's a treadle-vac or moraine?

I will answer my own question, after removing layers to black paint. The filler cap has an M on it and the master cylinder has numbers on the side that start with 54 which indicates it is a moraine. How about that. Now, if I can only find a kit or place that rebuilds moraine master cylinders.....

I'm coming back to you with another question, if you don't mind. The person who handles my year('58 Impala) has not responded yet. Do you know if the moraine and the treadle-vac are completely interchangeable or need some modification.

In looking through my parts book the various levers and brackets are different.
The TreadleVac was the production option power brake unit. The Bendix was the dealer installed accessory unit.
I am sending you a pictre of the factory installed unit and we will work from there.

Thanks for the picture of the treadle-vac unit. ollie Giorgi got back to me and said that they are interchangeable. When I bring it to my mechanic, being I'm not too mechanically savvy, we'll see if the rebuild kit will work or need a replacement OR CHUCK TO ENTIRE SYSTEM AND INSTALL DUAL MASTER CYLINDER,ETC.
and save the old system.
Gene, thanks again for your help.

They are only interchangeable if you have all the mounting brackets and levers and push rod.

It should mount on the fire wall on the existing moraine bracket. Levers and pushrod, hmmmmmm, I'll look into that.
Thanks
