I am searching for a pinion gear to a 1928 passenger car, 46/11 size, in good condition. Anybody having one for sale or a tip where ot buy/get it?

I don't know your plan, but it is recommended that the ring gear and pinion be replaced as a mated pair. Otherwise you may have severe noise problems.

Is a 31 ring and pinion anywere close? If so I have a set.

The '28 passenger ring and pinions are 42/11 not 46/11. I should have an extra pinion gear around here somewhere. Will need to look if that is what you are looking to get.

I have checked and he claims the combination to be 46/11. If you know the 42/11 would fit in same holes he would like to buy a set or a pinion.

The pinion will be different with 46/11 and 42/11 as the thickness of pinion teeth need to be a bit less. Can't help with the 46 teeth pinion.

I do have an extra but, having three '28 Chevys prefer to keep it in the case I will need it later. If it becomes a situation that the old Chevy will not regain roadworthy status, I can reconsider.

With regards to the ratios mentioned, in the repair manual for the '29 models it lists the ratio of 3.81 to 1 (42 to 11). For 1930 the ratio is 4.11 to 1 (41 to 10) I think the higher '29 ratio was to compete with the model A which came with a 3.78 to 1 ratio. Since the '29 differential was a carryover from the earlier models, ie '25 to '29, the higher speed ratio could be retro-fitted into the earlier housings. This should make them a much hotter car because it amounts to about a 8% speed increase. If you would like to make your speedometer accurate you will also need to change the speedometer drive gears to the 4 to 10 teeth out of a '29 transmission. I do not have a '28 repair manual so could not tell you if the 42 to 11 was offered in '28. The weak point of the whole thing is the pinion shaft. If you are going this far into it you probably should contact Billy Possum about the chrome moly pinion shafts and installation kit they offer. Should make a nicer tourer after all of that work.
