Not sure how to answer. Basically the choke cone runs up and down on the standpipe, a wishbone shaped part fits into the slot at the bottom of the choke cone and a shaft with slot fits into the hole in the carb body and corresponding hole in the wishbone part.

Thanks
That almost answers my problem. I must be missing what ever holds the stand pipe. Any drawings or break downs.

Some friendly advice. Although the early carburetors are primitive devices it takes an experienced person to get the best performance from then. I would recommend you send a PM to Chipper for more advice.

Nothing holds the standpipe. The standpipe assembly screws into the base of the carburetor body.

I suspect that the standpipe is broken off. If so it takes some special tools to remove the venturi, remainder of standpipe, clean the threads, etc.

I have worked on a bunch of carburetors that had someone that didn't have the knowledge or skill to repair them. I cuss nearly every time as it makes my job much more difficult when they make parts tougher to take apart.

Read Chipper's posting above. Your pot metal standpipe is broken off from the threaded base and it is floating up and down with the choke cone.

The www.fillingstation.com sells new stand pipes and most other parts you may need for the 150s carby.

RW-195 standpipe
RW-291 Venturi and choke cone
FS-243 Accelerator pump tube
DG-173 Carter manual

etc, etc.

Yes the Filling Station sells many of the carburetor parts but does not have the special tools nor the expertise on how to rebuild the carb and have it work correctly. There are even some "professional" carburetor rebuilders that don't have the tools or expertise either. They can partially disassemble, clean and put back together but if it takes much more they are lost. Have redone several over the past few years that a rebuilder screwed up. That included using the wrong parts, mis-adjustment and trying to repair parts and failing.

Chipper,
You, the J Y D , and Ray have my full agreement. Reference to the fillingstation parts was meant for a visual reference to the threads on the standpipe and other parts which needed ID also.
Regards Jack

My comments were based on the fact that many people think they can rebuild one of the old carburetors. If all it takes is to clean it then nearly anyone can do that. But if it takes more extensive repairs then only a limited number of people are qualified. Taking out some of the parts can take special techniques, learned over years of working on those carburetors. It has taken me up to six hours to just take one apart without destroying something. Replacing the standpipe takes some special tools. If incorrect parts were installed then it takes detailed specifications to identify them. If the does not run right then it takes some experience to sort out the problem.

I had one 1931 carburetor sent to me that was taken apart by the owner/mechanic several times. Parts were checked, new parts were purchased but it just would not idle correctly. It took some time to discover that it was corrosion in the body causing the problem.

I have had a few carburetors sent me that had attempts to repair broken standpipes. One was "rebuilt" by a national advertising "rebuilder". Most have used a piece of pipe that was pushed into the remaining standpipe base. If they had worked well I doubt that they would have been sent to me.

I am sure I have not seen it all yet but have seen many attempts to "rebuild" carburetors. Have had to replace parts that had come from a non-Chevy carburetor. They look sorta the same. Have often gotten carbs with metering jets and other controlling orifices drilled out in an attempt to get them to run (better?). Some of the most interesting are those taken to a local mechanic to rebuild. The most frustrating are those attempted to be taken apart by someone without out the proper tools or technique. The slots are often so rounded that the parts need to be drilled out. Then there are the people that damage the slots and then take a hacksaw to make or deepen the slot and cut a slot in the cast iron body. If the cut is deep enough to compromise the sealing taper then the body is garbage.

Yep, and I know who you are talking about. He is also kinda sorta famous for gluing the broken standpipes with epoxy. And, from what I hear he has way more work than he can handle!! Go figure!!

Most people don't complain. They just live with a crappy carburetor assuming that the dude that rebuilt it did a good job so there must be another problem. Or they just chalk it up to experience and send it to another.

As you know most carburetors just need a good cleaning and adjustment. It is when they need more that the men get separated from the boys.
