I have what I believe to be a window washer system for a 1947 Chevy. I have not installed the nozzles in the car yet and wanted to test the system first. When I hook up the vacuum to the washer bottle the the washer fluid will only come out of the nozzles when I disconnect vacuum from the washer bottle and I push the button under the dash. Does this sound correct? I know that the system uses the vacuum from the window wipers so I am speculating that the nozzles will only work with the wipers are on and using vacuum.

You have it figured out correctly. When the button is released the washer provides the water to the nozzles. And Yes, the engine must be running.
