The '41 coupe I just bought has a GM radio with model #466. Is this the correct radio for 1941?
Thanks,
Sid

No, that is an after market radio. The model number for the correct radio will have 6 characters. 986542 Not an actual model number.

The correct radio will have either a bow tie or the word Chevrolet.

Thanks Ray. Well at least it fits, looks good, and fills the hole in the dash. I'll mess with it soon to see if it does anything else. Where would the speaker be located? In the radio box itself?

And one add'l question. The model #466 is a GM radio. Would it have been sold by dealers after the car was delivered or?

The speaker should be installed in the center of the dash behind the grill.

Where did you find that #466 was a GM radio?

Ray, Just to be sure I didn't dream it, I crawled back under the dashboard with my flashlight, and sure enough I saw the GM logo just above the model number on the side of the radio. It also has GM on the dial. Could it be a later radio made by GM?
I've found G&D's series, "Chevrolet Accesories for 1941" very helpful in the last few days. Thanks for providing them. In looking at some of the radios pictured this model 466 looks most like model 985696 (march 2011 issue) in that it fills only the rectangular hole in the dash and does not use the 2 outboard holes for volume and tuning.
Also the article about 1941 clocks (may 2010 issue)is great. The clock in my Canadian 41 is labeled "made in Canada" and is the wind-up type. I wound it yesterday, and it keeps perfect time!

GM Canada had radios with model numbers similar to that number. Sometimes they had a mapleleaf symbol on the dial. Some of their radios were made to fit in a number of vehicles including Chevrolets.

Thanks. The radio does have a red maple leaf along with the letters "GM" on the dial.

That is the explanation of the weird #. I have a few Canadian radios in stock and should have thought of that.

I did some more looking and I have a model 466 that I have rebuilt. I also have the manual for it and it says that it was designed for 1946 GM cars.

Thanks guys. It appears that some radios for that period had volume and tuning controls outboard of the radio itself, while others used controls contained within the rectangular opening in the dash. When the factory installed the later version, were the outboard holes plugged with something or were they not punched out at all?

My 466 has mounting studs that go through the outside holes. On a 1940 Chev Standard that I see quite often, because there is no radio the two holes are filled with bright metal discs.

By the way if you would like a scan of the data sheets, just let me know.

Thanks old216. My outside holes have chrome caps over them. I'll pop one off to see what is under it. I would like the scans when you get time. My brother messes with old radios, and he might be able to do something with this one.
