Hi Guys, 1931 Chevy. She runs like a dream, hard starting from cold but when she runs she runs like a dream. Warm start is a breeze and turns over with the manual crank. Well my problem is that she runs around the block a few times and then suddenly cuts out, temp is at normal, oil pressure is 5 to 7 and the ampmeter at 20 while running, new battery. Coil is warm but not hot and there is good spark. Fuel glasses is full. After this cut out she battles to start and the battery draws flat after a few tries. I let her stand over night with battery charger on and she started the next morning, took her on the same run around the block and within 100m of previous days cut out spot she did the same. Help!

sounds like something's getting hot, so resistance is increasing enough to prohibit adequate current flow. poor connections (including inside of switch), partially broken conductor, too small gauge of wire. a bad condenser or coil may cause this also. check for frayed insulation, pinched wire. when allowed to cool resistance goes down and currents flows again. check voltages at different places in the ignition system when cold then drive it until it quits. check voltages again.

good luck

Not familiar with the ignition system on your car but I would look to the coil or the condensor on my 52.

It sounds like probably the electrolock is causing the problem. This is due to either a bad connection where the electrolock mounts to the distributor or in the plunger assembly of the electrolock. This is a fairly common occurrence on old electrolocks, especially after the engine gets warm.

Also, you need to adjust the third brush on your generator since the output is 20 amps and that is too much. Adjust the generator output down to 12 amps and you will get a longer life out of your charging system.
