Toolman, aluminum can be applied over uncoated steel by flame spraying or arc spraying. It is a process by which aluminum is melted into a fine mist and sprayed with air pressure, like a paint spray. I had it done to the exhaust system on my '36 pickup when I restored it in the early 70s and it still looks perfect today.
corvette central(has a website) sells aluminized exhaust systems if your 283 is in a 57-61 corvette. they bend their own pipes as does mike yeager at mid-america corvettes(also has website). give then a call if your in need of pass car systems--they may have them. good luck, mike

I had an aluminized exhaust system put on my 283. It was bent using the original cards that showed all of the bends, etc. The exhaust system fits like a glove and has all of the original bends in it. It was done by a local mechanic who works about 1 hour from my home. After all of my looking for an original system, I found a solution in my own back yard.
