I bought new rubber/cloth grommets for the door handle ferrules. I assumed they went between the ferrule and the body but it looks like the fit over the handle to go between it and the ferrule. Am I correct?

I don't see any kind of indention in my ferrules. And putting the grommet on the outside over the handle almost covers the ferrule with a poor fit. It also looks like cr_p. Putting the rubber grommet around the ferrule to fit between it and the painted body seems like the correct way but the grommet is too small (diameter) and that also looks like cr_p. So I'm thinking this is another part that is not made correctly (see my other post regarding wiper arms). Or maybe I'm missing something. Anyone else have an idea or suggestion? I want to return Mike R's install tool next week.

I would really appreciate anyone who might be able to give me some more information on the '34 door handle ferrule/grommet issue. I am still unsure where the rubber grommets go. This question is due to a poor fit on the grommets I purchased.

I need to get the 3 handles (including trunk) installed this week so this coming weekend I can return the ferrule install tool borrowed from Mike R.

I am not completely sure but based on your posts, I think you are referring to the ferrule on the outside of the door. They can be installed with the special staking tool. If you install the rubber donut seal it will go over the ferrule part that extends into the door. It will end up between the outside part of the ferrule and door skin.

Chipper,

Thanks for your post. What you said is exactly what I thought the rubber grommet was for. But the ones I received are too small (3/4" i.d.) to fit around the diameter (7/8") of the ferrule. I was able to stretch one on but it was distorted which looked terrible. This led me to my questions. Looking at the 29 - 42 Parts Catalog I do not see any grommet for the handle until 1938 so I am wondering why one (70-9) it is listed in the F.S. catalog for a 26-37 Car.

It looks like I should have ordered the CV-641 which should fit. But the catalog said the 70-9 was "original". Anyway, I went to the local Ace Hardware store today and bought some thin rubber washers with 1-1/4" o.d. and will cut out a 7/8" inside diameter to match the ferrule and that should solve the problem.

Jerry,
I dont believe there was ever a gasket of any kind between the ferrule and the door skin. There is supposed to be a rubber seal inside the hollow part of the ferrule to seal beteen it and the handle. In theory, it would look like a bit of tiny 1/4 round made into a circle. Does this make sense?
You can call me at work until 4 PM 573-592-1991. I will be at Car Club meeting tonight, should be home around 9 PM 573-442-6759

There was no seal between the ferrule and handle. GM used two different type ferrules over the years, both had the same inside diameter and the handle was a close fit for the inside. One ferrule had a 1 1/16 lip (the part that was against the door skin)and the rubber sleeve came already installed on the outside of the ferrule and was between the ferrule and the hole in the door. The sleeve had a lip that sealed between the ferrule and door skin. The other ferrule had a lip of 1 3/16. I have several of both kind of ferrules that were purchased over the years while buying obselete stock from dealers. The small lip ferrule always had the sleeve already installed. The large lip ferrule came without the sleeve. I have owned four 39 Chevrolets and they all had the small lip ferrule with the sleeve installed. There is also two different lengths of the small lip ferrule. The parts book is kind of confusing when trying to distinguish between the use of the two ferrules.

Well hopefully I haven't created a problem with the rubber gasket/seal I made. I bought some very thin rubber gaskets with the same o.d. as the ferrule flange and cut the i.d. to fit the ferrule. I used Mike R's ferrule tool to install the ferrules which went on nice and tight. But with the thin gasket (1/16") I hope it does not hold the handle out to far. It sure looks good and there should be no problem with the paint ever chipping.

Dandyd and Mike, thanks for your posts and information!!

How about that. I just installed my TWO door-ferrules today on my '31 Landau. But I put the chrome ferrule up tight against the painted door surface. It's a knuckle-biter, but I think that's how they did it back in thirty one.

That's how it is on my '32 as well.

The ferrule used on Jerry's '34 as well as on my '35 Coupe and all my '35-'38 trucks is not like the one used on a '39 car.
The subject ferrule does indeed have a rubber seal/grommet, inside, between it and the handle.
I too have a jar full of the later type ferrule (rubber on the outside) which I have harvested from Chevy dealers over the years. Lynn Steele sells the rubber to go INSIDE the door handle ferrule on Jerry's '34. NO rubber was originally used between the ferrule and the door skin on the early ferrule.
