Haven't welded since high school and a little afterwards. Did the gas settling, where there was two tanks? Oxigen and gas?
Everytime I would nod my head for the helmet to cover my eyes, guess what? Ok, so I want to start welding again so I can work on my 58, doing what I can to get me by. I see now adays there are wireless welders, what amps do you suggest to start out on? I can advance as I get better:)

...welding may have changed a bit since high school . When was high school?
Yes, two tanks Oxacetylene O2 and C2H2.
The new easy is wire fed, either MIG or fluxcore. Maybe that is what you mean by wireless? There are several small sets made for hobbiests. I have a $400 Lincoln 110Volt unit that will weld almost any ferrous on a car, it comes bare (with fluxcore wire) or with a add on MIG attachment. Hobart also has a good model, of course you can go up to the top of the line MIG for several thousand dollars and also stick welder Shop models for heavy welding like on farm implements etc. for several thousand dollars. For gas cutting I use a NGC cutting torch and welding tip setup or, my fav for Oxyacetylene welding which is a Dillon Henrod 7000 that I have used for 20 years

I think it is easier to start out on a modern wirefed setup and for cutting a small plasma cutter is top notch.

Hi badboy!

Now that you are no longer new to Chevy Chatter II you can post your questions in any of the other forums as needed instead of here in the "New To Chat?" forum.

Good luck with your project!

Badboy
As Mack suggested with MIG the gasless (flux core) variety are good when used in windy conditions but generally produce a lot of "spatter" where there is no or very little wind the gas type produces a better weld and a lot easier to clean up after.

The flux core wire is a lot more expensive but you dont have the expense of gas or bottle rent.

I have a small unit (130 amp) that will use either type wire which is good upto 1/8" thick material but not much better than chewing gum over 1/4" thick. I prefer the old "stick" welder for heavy duty jobs even though it is the same amperage machine.
