As far as I can tell the tail lights, lenses and molding around the lens on my Aero are original. I could never see any trace of paint on the molding. So my vote is "no".

The same tail lamp rim was used from 1941-1948. Only the 1941 had paint in the groves.

No kidding??? I don't think I've ever seen a tail light rim without the black lines... I'm going to have to go check all the used ones I've pulled off of 1947 and 1948 parts cars to see what I have.

I remember now, I DID replace mine with a less rusty pair. I found my rusty originals today, and YES they do have paint in the lines?

Speaking of the rims (doors) I didn't know that the 41 was the only one that had the black paint.

Which ones (42-48) had the chrome vertical (retangular) pieces below the taillights? And did they have painted grooves?

I looked at pictures of the 1942-48 rims in Chevrolet actual photos and it looks like they had the black lines.

The 1947-48 Fleetmaster and Fleetline had the trim below the lamps.

Thanks, Gene and Chef Chevy.

So see if I've got it strainght:

Taillight doors on the 41-48 were the same and were painted black in the grooves where the screw (bolt) goes.

The Fleetline and Fleetmaster had the vertical trim below the doors and the grooves in those were painted black, also.

Sound about right?
Best,
Charlie

The pieces that go below the tail lights (the parts book calls them medallions) on the 47-48 Fleetline/Fleetmasters has the vertical stripes painted in body color. Hard to believe they went to that extra trouble, when the rest of the striping/lettering is either red or black, but these need to be painted to match your car.

Decarter I did not know that but having a black car no need to worry, black stripes will work correctly

i have NOS tail light rims in the correct GM box w/ correct numbers and they have black paint on them. the verical trim below the tail lights are suppose to be painted the same color as the body according to the GM spec's. The GM spec's are posted on my website www.1948chevy.com/support/48pg1.htm

hi, no one mentioned it but there are actually two tailight doors for the 41 to 48 cars, the first is the door that has the lines on the front and the sides these are painted black, this was used only on the 41 pass cars. the second is the one that has the lines only on the front of the door not the sides, painted black and were used on the 42 to 48 cars. the part no. is the same for either one. down through the years they became sort of mix and match as the dealers used up whatever the had in stock. dennis

Dennis,
Thanks for straightening this out. I remember the 1941 TA telling me there was a difference (years ago) but thought it was no paint on the later.

Diz,
Thanks for straightening out this question. You had me scratching my head with the "sides" words. Once I figured out that you really meant "edge", I caught on right away. And, I remember that 'ol Richie had told me about that difference way back in the early seventies. And that was before you cleaned him out. Grin.

I had forgotten all about it over the years, as apparently, Gene had, also.
Best wishes and hope you are doing well,
Charlie

Yes, this is true as the recessed groove wraps around the edge of the frame.......where the later version stops short of the edge.

The parts book refers to the head lamp rims, tail lamp rims, etc. as "doors"

I've been following the discussion about the tail light rims and thought I had a pretty good idea of the difference in the rims, but can't say that I had ever seen the rim being described as being used on the 1941s. Luckily, on the Early 6 Cylinder Tour to Hershey, PA last week, there happened to be 1941 convertible in the AACA museum that had the correct tail light rims. I took a picture of one and will post it under "VCCA Member's Photos". I had looked at several of the 41s on the tour and they all had the 42-48 rim that I'm familiar with. Good to know there really is a difference. You learn something new every day!
