I need to buy a full set of tires for the 1928 Coupe.

I have experience with the Lester brand and also the Firestones. There is also a Goodyear 'diamond'tread pattern available for about the same money.

Outside of that, Coker tire is now offering a brand of radials called Excelsior, with fittings that cover the 1930 6 cyl Chevvies, but nothing yet in a 440/450-21 inch size.

Other than that, well, what brands do people like from the above choices. I am leaning towards another set of Firestones, but am open to trying the Goodyears.

The tire I really want is a repro Michelin, which is available in a 475/500-19 inch, and costs a saintly 326 bucks a copy. Okay, so maybe I have Champagne tastes every now and then...

I have been very satisfied with Firestones. They are easy to mount and seem to wear well and resist cracking. Have two sets on '28 Chevys.

Hi all,

I'm a little confused about tire sizes. The 4-cylinder parts book says that my '28 National 1/2 ton truck should have 30 x 4.5 tires. I thought the '30' translated to a 20 (as in 4.5x20), so how come there's 4.40/4.50 x 21 tires on the truck?

30 x 5 translates to 5.00x20 for my 1927 LM 1 ton.

Thanks, Dean

The 30 x 4.5 has a rim size of 21" It is 30" outside diameter tire with two 4.5" side walls. The calculation is 30 minus 2 x 4.5" or 9" equaling 21" inside diameter of tire or max. diameter of the rim. Use the same calculation for the 30x5 is 30 minus 2 x 5 (10) or a 20" diameter rim.

Hi Jay,

I have run 2 sets of Firestone on my Chev during the last 35 years. They wear well and I think they look great.

Regards

Ray

Stay away from radials on split rims. I heard from a tire guy that they can cause too much stress on the rim joint and can cause a rim failure. On my Oldsmobiles they used a goodyear diamond tread for the rears only right from the factory on the cars and the trucks. A straight tread was used on the fronts. Not sure if Chey did that or not. with 4 wheel brakes I bet they used the same tread for front and rear but that is a guess.

Bob, that's a good point you make about radials and split-rims. On the 1930 Chevy, its a stronger wire wheel, so it should be okay, but yes, perhaps its too much for a split rim.

I think I am going to be looking at the tires on cars at Greenfield Village on Sept 12,13th. Anyone else going to be there as well?

Thanks for the tire-size explanation, Chipper!

Good to know.
