I asked this question already as a side question by one of the last topics but I should like to start it as a new topic.
My 48 Fleetmaster is on the road only since last June and I am still busy fixing the bags.
My question is: How many inches do you have to move the steering wheel of a standing car before the wheels actually start moving. The idea of the question is to know what other owner consider as normal steering wheel play on a car in good condition.
Thank you

Jianis

When the car was new or with a steering gear in good condition and properly adjusted there will be no play when the wheels are in the "straight ahead" position. Often the steering gear can be adjusted. If the adjustment doesn't remove the play the pitman shaft and bushings are worn out. Also the pitman arm its self is in two sections that are bolted together. There are 4 hard rubber busings between the halves and from grease leakage and old age these busings are bad.

Thank you Chevgene

I have seen in the manual that it should be no play but I guess that should not last long as everything starts to get warn, thats why I am asking what the play should be on a reasonable condition car.
My steering gear needs new pitman shaft bushings so I will rebuild my gearbox (new bushings and bearings) and pitman arm (new rubber bushings)
