FYI, Before heading to Cortez, be advised that the wrecking yard there that I mentioned was closed when I drove through there, both in August 2009 and August 2010.

Here's a shot of the wrecking yard in Cortez, Colorado that I mentioned above. Back in the 80's and earlier, the whole yard was filled with interesting vehicles. As you can see, there are lots of empty spaces now. This photo is shown looking to the east with the snow-capped San Juan mountains in the background. I couldn't get the whole yard in the picture at this range--this shows about 1/3 of the yard.

Well, I see that didn't work. Here's a link to the photograph.

OK Mark. I won't make a special trip to Cortez to see it.

Thanks for the photo. I look at the north side of the San Juans from my house. They're spectacular.

The road south out of Ouray (The Million Dollar Highway) is a fun drive. No guardrails and drop-offs where the shoulder should be. I drive it a lot and have gotten used to it. The highway was not built on the railroad bed. The toll road was built first. The railroad came later and ran along the mountainside above the road.

I generally get to Durango once a year when the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs their route backwards from Silverton on the last day of the season.
