What cars do I have? Well, a 1918 490 touring, 1925 Roadster, 1928 Roadster, a 1928 Touring, a 1928 Convertible Sport Cabriolet, a 1933 Eagle coupe, 1941 5 pass coupe, 1954 BAHDTP, 1961 Impala Convertible. Also several modern cars. If you are looking for a pair of plates for your car, expect to pay +- $200.00.

I have seen a single 1908 Ohio License Plate sell for well over $2000.00. On the rare occasion that a pair show up they sell for well over $5000.00......Needless to say I do not have these in my license plate collection.
1908 was the first year Ohio issued plates. The 1909 are the same plate. Difference is the plate number. The are porcelin covered steel. Similar to how signs were made back in the day.

Some DMV would turn you in for making a plate or alternating one. Same as altering the numbers on the car. Some tricks can be used however. When I purchased my 1925 Roadster it came with the original 1925 title, insurance policy and payment schedule on the bank loan. Needless to say I wanted all of those documents. When I registered the vehicle they demanded I release the title to them. I ask what would happen to it. They said it would be destroyed as soon as a new title was issued. I did not register the car at that time and left with all the original papers. Then a light came on. I ask the owner to file for a lost title. When that arrived I registered the car and presented the new title. I now have the original title, payment schedule and insurance policy. The son also gave me every one of the drivers license that were issued annually from the time they issued the cards until his dad died. These original papers are as valuable to me as the car.

Mr Daily made a down payment of $250.00. On the insurance policy Mr Daily listed his occupation as "Timber Faller". If I remember correctly I was told the car went immediately into the woods and stayed there. It carried all the tools of the trade for a timber faller. The running boards were proof of what was carried there. The deck lid and the driver's door were removed and stored elsewhere. The trunk showed evidence of having been loaded with the large chain saws that were used in the Oregon harvest of the massive trees. The floor of the trunk was sagged down from the heavy wood cutters tools. The intent was to take the car back to the son who I actually purchased the car from and give him a ride. Two things happened that prevented that from happening. The son moved and I did not find where he went and the more practical reason was, it took me 4-years to restore the car. The day before I loaded the car for the Anniversary meet in Santa Rosa California I put on the last coat of paint on the front fenders. We managed to win our class and Second place for Best of Show 4-cylinder. The car has been driven many hundred miles over the last 24 years. It has made many of the National 4-Cylinder Tours. It is not in show condition now, but can still run with the big boys.

Since I put plates of the year of my cars and the states where the car came from on my cars, I started looking foer a 21 New Mexico Plate for my new 490. BOY! HOWDY!! Look OUT! OUCH! Seems 21 New Mexico porcelain plates are scarce and have special tags that dictate the years. They had a big problem with people just not getting plates and the cops looking the other way in most of the smaller towns. The state then started cracking down on law enforcement to enforce the law in about 1922-23. Guess the wild west wasn't dead yet in 1920! 200-300 is not out of the question for a nice plate from 20-22 and another 100-200 for a year tag in good shape. Ones in bad shape still bring high dollars. I found out my car came from Durango Colorado originally so now I will look for a CO plate instead or just make a NM plate myself.

Since I have a barn full of cars from all over out west it makes it interesting. So far 1 Montana 23 Olds truck, 1 Nebraska 28 Chevy truck, 1 wisconsin (possibly Colorado still trying to verify) 28 Chevy Coach, 1 California 24 Olds touring, 1 21 490 New Mexico/ Colorado. I don't want my babies getting homesick and breaking down in protest, hehehehe!

Speaking of Durango, Colorado and vintage license plates, I lived in Durango from 1981 thru 1992. Around 1988, I was really hot to acquire a 1933 Chevrolet Sport Coupe, but hadn't located one yet. One day I was over in Cortez, Colorado, about 45 miles west of Durango, where there was (and still is, though severely gutted) a huge wrecking yard--I'd say about 5 acres of really great vintage cars and trucks, from the twenties through the sixties. I stopped in at the yard office to ask if I could look through the yard, and I noticed hanging on the wall a 1933 Colorado license plate. I inquired about it and the owner reached below the counter and pulled out a stack of 1933 Colorado license plates, still in their original brown DMV wrappers. I bought a matched set for about $30.00, I think. I then asked if he had a nice 33 Chev Sport Coupe to go with the plates, but unfortunately he didn't.
Within a year I located and bought a really nice, low-mileage 33 Sport Coupe in Alabama and trailered it home to Durango.
As I mentioned above, the wrecking yard in Cortez is still there, about 5 miles northwest of town on the east side of U.S. Highway 666. In fact, it's for sale. I inquired about it, and it seems like they were wanting in excess of $1,000,000 for the place, which was ridiculous and is no doubt the reason it is still for sale. The yard changed hands once or twice since the 80's and has been severely gutted over the years. There's probably no pre-war stuff left, and most of the good tri-five Chevs are gone.

I'm only an hour north of Durango in Ridgway. I was ready to drive down to that wrecking yard in Cortez until I came to the severely gutted part. I may still stop in next time I'm down there.
BTW: I recently picked up an original 1920 Colorado plate on eBay. Turned out the seller lives 9 miles up the road in Ouray. The '20 CO plates are pretty unique. The numbers are welded on to a 12 gauge steel plate with an embossed metal year tab held on by folded metal tabs. The thing weighs almost 2 lbs and must have cost a fortune to make.

That hwy going south out of Ouray is pretty wild! I think it was built on a narrow gauge railbed wasn't it? Been a long time since I went down that way, back in the early 80s. I would check that yard anyway. A lot of old yards used to pull good parts off and stock them in old trucks, buses and sheds. Never know what you will find in a pile somewhere in the "back 40" and if things were tagged, the mice may have made good use of them so take parts books with pictures. If you get to Durango and think about it ask around if anyone knew of my 21 490 in town. They told me they spotted it from a street in an open garage back in the 80s. Be neat to track that owner (or his family) down and find out something about the car. The people I got it from knew almost nothing about it.
