Here's some interesting photo's I pulled off of the Canadian Pontiac site. They have a thread for photos of any make...it's at 19 pages long! I've picked some of the Chevrolets. Please feel free to post your black and whites as well...Chevrolets only! Lets see how long we can enjoy this thread!

First is a group of 1941 coupes bought by the Ontario Provincial Police, as their first squad cars. Taken at the Prince's Gates at the Canadian National Exibition site in Toronto.

Next is a bunch of factory fresh 1949's being loaded for delivery. I thought the transport looked cool!

Thanks for the photos. All were interesting.

I'm not surprised that the Ontario Provincial Police chose the 41 coupes for patrol cars. Shows they had really studiously compared all the makes available and chose wisely.

I am sure their choice was not based on price alone but engineering and quality. Style and ride too. There was no need for a patrolman to have to ride around in something he was embarrassed and ashamed to be driving. It may have only made for a bad attitude and, possibly, more citations issued. I could go on and on but... well, you know.

Charlie... I honestly thought of you when I posted that photo first! The OPP still have a restored coupe at their museum in Orillia, Ont.

Here's another B&W...

Dealership in 1951, Plymouth, Michigan.

I certainly don't mean to butter up to Charlie; but that photo of all those 41's does look pretty neat. The old transporters look cool also. Thanks to Brewster for posting. I'd post some if I had any idea how.....

Geez Brewster, I could have gone all week without seeing that photo of
the crunched 50 and the 60 Pontiac against the pole!

On the other hand, I like the second photo much better. Nice looking
assortment of "used" 54-57's on the side of the building! Cute pedal
car in the window too!!!

As for the offer of a lesson, well.....

Bill.

I researched the accident. I found the following article:

The City of Angels, California. 1962

Yesterday there was an automobile accident at the corner of Hollywood and Vine right here in the city. Yep. It seems that a 1960 Pontiac (nothing special), driven by a movie nutcase, ran a stoplight and colided with a lovely 1950 Chevrolet whose driver clearly had the right of way. Witnesses said the Chevrolet had the green light and was just mozing along when out of nowhere came the Pontiac smacking into it.

The driver of the Chevrolet was shaken up a little but soon claimed his senses. He complained that his pristine car would need a extensive cosmetic repairs and a new upper (steering) control arm replacement. He was wiping tears.

The Pontiac was a total wreck. (What would one expect when one tangles with a Chevrolet?) Its driver was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. He is expected to make a full recovery. It's marvelous what modern medicine can do.

The driver of the Pontiac told the police he was a farmer from eastern Tennessee and was doing the "spot the Hollywood movie star" routine. He said that he was distracted when he thought he saw Eva Gabor and "Arnold" a-strolling on the sidewalk and thus had a involuntary reflex and instead of stepping on the brake he stepped on the gas. The officer said that that was understandable. He said he had seen seen several episodes of "Green Acres" himself and liked that pig, too. He issued the Pontiac driver a citation anyway.

Charlie

BTW: There was no byline.

You're right, 32 Confederate! It's hard to see the hood sides in the picture, but now I see the grille and cowl area are different. So I guess it's a 1913,'14 or early '15 Series L Light Six? The curve in the front fenders says it's not the H series.

A quote from a Buick blog from Flint..."The old Imperial Wheel Company became Buick's service department in 1916. Chevrolet built cars here between 1912-1914. In 1915 the Monroe Motor Company used the building , it was demolished in 1938. Then Buick built their new Service and Parts building #84 on this site. It would become the engineering building for Buick in 1947."

Here's an officer with his brand new 1950 Chevrolet patrol car

And from the Hemmings web page "Company cars lined up at the curb in front of the editorial offices of “Speed Age” magazine in Hyattsville, Maryland." I wish I got a '50 convertible for a company car!

Note that the 1950 is a Deluxe model. The cops always bought the strippers. I wonder if its because it was a Power Glide which would have been a better suited for high speed work.

I did notice that they sprung for the Deluxe model, and also wondered who painted it. Were they two toned in the factory, or did the station have to farm out the job? I'm in a really 1950 sort of mood recently (more on that later ...) so here's another '50 convert in a dealership in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Most police cars were solid black back then. Some painted the top or the doors white. That one looks to be black with the white roof.
In Wisconsin the state highway patrol cars were a light gray in the 1950's. They more or less used what ever light gray the manufactorer offered and all were not exactly the same.

The '50 convertible looks rather blah with no white walls. As I remeber evry convertible we sold back hen had whites. Convertibles were not too popular in this area. I would say in 1950 we probably sold 10 convertibles of the 1000 or so new cars we delivered. By 1953 this percentage picked up condiderably and by 1955 was probly 10 times more than 1950.

I grew up in New York city, the (marked) cop cars then...in the 1940's were all Plymouth coupes, they were all dark green with black fenders and white tops. In the 1950's the city switched to ford's but kept the same color scheme.
That picture of all them Chevy cop coupes in Canada reminded me of N.Y....I am sure the choice of cars had nothing to do with a car's dependability but more to do with how much the city's procurement department got "kicked back" from the dealer...Amen

The siren on the right front fender looks heavy enough to tip the car on its side.

This is from someone else's blog... I wasn't sure if it's really an Amesbury Special, but it's neat because its a 1915! I thought the Amesburys were all white...a repaint?

"Taken on or about September, 1948 in the original showroom of Dooley Brothers Chevrolet/Oldsmobile in Somerville, New Jersey. On the left, a brand-new 1949 Chevrolet sedan and, on the right, a 1915 Chevrolet Amesbury Special. The second ever Chevrolet dealership in the New York area known then as the Newark zone. Pictured left to right: Harry Dooley III, Harry Dooley Jr., and Harry Dooley (standing next to his brother) Michael Bernard Dooley, Bernard Michael Dooley, and (on the fender) Lawrence Michael Dooley, age almost one. Submitted by the guy on the fender." -- Lawrence Michael Dooley
Location: Somerville, New Jersey"

Yes - this is a H-3 Amesbury Special, Car No. N8847, that Dooley Chevrolet in Somerville, NJ, owned for many years. B.M. Dooley was VCCA #649. but I believed he sold this #N8847 to R. De Andrade of Wyckoff, NJ, who restored this H-3. I saw this same car at the 1969 Eastern Regional National Meet. N8847 is now owned by the Merrick Auto Musrum in Alda, NE.

So is the Amesbury still black? Am I right thinking they were all white from the factory?

Here's my cool picture for today. From the Chevybombs site... It looks like a truck from one of the "Parade of Progress" shows, but I'm not sure...any one know? It looks like '54 accesory wheel disks, and side trim from the '53 Corvette showcar on the rear splash fenders.

I had no idea that Richie Cunningham drove a Chevy convertible! I guess I was a little young for the early episodes, and only started watching in the later years when it was all shot in the studios.

Charlie - Here is more of the same scene from a different angle showing my Belair and Dick Olson's beautiful convertible.

We were on our way to the 45th Anniversary Meet and stopped at Moab. Later that evening a bunch of great guys got me into Grand Junction after abandoning my Belair in the desert.

Another neat picture, Roger! I have a real affinity
for 37 to 54 Chevs. And the early 50's in particular.
Likely due to the cars that were around when I was
coming of age, etc.

I'm not sure I recall just who Dick Jones is. (??) Did
he used to have a 38 coupe?? Was he at Silverdale in
August??

Anyway, nice shot of three 50 Chevs. Thnx....

Bill.

All three of those '50's are beautiful cars...I have a real soft spot for '50 converts! Just to bring the thread back on topic (not that anyone minded the new pics) here's a pic from August of 1972. My parents pulled this out of a farmers field near Smithfalls Ont. Lots of rust and mud!

Mack... Do you know the history of the truck in that photo? Was it a show truck, or used to pull the show vehicles? That sander is a neat idea! Reminds me of the traction spray on the early Camaros...

Those hoses are for the air brakes on the semi-trailer the tractor is usually connected to via the fifth wheel. One hose is service air and the other is trailer brake air. They are connected to the trailer by connectors known in the trade as a "Gladhand connector".

I assumed that... they just look really long. I guess they look shorter on todays trucks because they are coiled? It just seems an odd way to store them on this otherwise nice looking truck!

There must have been 2 Peter Brocks as there was 1 over here that won Bathurst 500 (mile) 1000 (klm) 9 times amongst several other auto races. In the early days of his career built his on cars but mostly drove Holden (Aus GM).
He died in a rally crash on the west coast a couple of years ago.

Here's today's picture... A 1952 Deluxe Four door sedan, going for a ride through the Golden Gate to who knows where...This is from the Chevybombs site. I wish we knew the circumstances behind it...

Sure looks like seaweed on the lower lift and suspension that you can see. Would guess that it took a swim and was being recovered.

To me, it looks like the "netting material" one would use to capture whatever they are lifting.

Yep, that definitely looks like netting material used for lifting the vehicle. They use the same stuff for lifting crates and etc. as well.

I love these old delivery pictures... It let's you see the cars as they were...fresh from the factory, and also incluse neat looking rigs trailering them. Here's a bunch of '26 or '27 Chevs being delivered.

And, a vintage photo of my '31 when I was leaving Boston on the way to Seattle. This was in August 1973. I wanted to get the upholstery done when we docked for 3 days in Acapulco, but I went ashore and the next thing that I remember was being dragged back to the boat just in time to ship out. (I didn't wake again until we were in San Diego.)

From the Warrior's Day Parade in 1920 at the Canadian National Exibition (CNE) in Toronto. Can anyone verify that the car is a Chevrolet? The shape of the front fender is the only thing I can recognize, as so much of the car is covered with the banner.

Sure looks like a Chevy Touring. Headlights look okay. Just not sure about the hood and windshield frame. It is hard to determine the hood shape as it is draped with something. Looks like the cowl kicks up to the bottom of the windshield like a 490 but the fenders are not 490 (look more like a FB series front fender).

Here's Gorries Chevrolet on Gerrard St. in Toronto. The picture is from March of 1956, and there's a beautiful row of new Chevies, including a Nomad. My Grandfather, Kirby Pearce would have been at work this day, running the office and books here. He bought his '51 and his brother Nick's '51 (now mine)here five years earlier.

I Googled Gorries a while ago, and this group shot from 1952 came back. When I showed my Dad, he was able to pick his father out right away. He's in the fourth row from the front, 3rd from the left. He always wore a hat!

Pictures like this, "from back in the day," sure are neat,
Brewster!! It's so cool to see these old cars when they
were just normal, every day type cars. The whole nostalgia
thing just about sweeps me away when I see photos like this.

Thnx so much for posting this one and the many others that
you've done.

Way to go Pat... there's no stopping you now!! Kind of odd that they screwed up the paint scheme on that '41... The first picture in this thread shows them with white rear fenders, not black! This car is now in the OPP museaum in Orillia, Ontario.

Brewster,

You mention white rear fenders in the "first" picture in the thread. That made
me curious so I went back and looked and it looks like the cars are all
white, except for the black hoods. As I looked at it again, I was reminded
of what I thought when I first saw it --- "that's a pretty weird way
to two-tone a 41 coupe!"

These most recent pictures with white body and black fenders seem like a
more "normal" way to two-tone that body style.

computer Just my 2 cents.....

Here's a couple of interesting ones. The first one is of a 20's Chevy transformed into a railroad speeder. It was used to haul people and supplies to a remote logging camp near Hearst, ON in the 40's. The other one is of the motorcade on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's (Princess at the time) visit to Kapuskasing, ON in 1951. She must have been in the third car which looks like a Caddy.

Unfortunately the Inn isn't there any more. It was demolished in 2008, exactly when it was 80 years old. I slept thee on my wedding night, in the same suite Ole Liz had stayed in.

I don't know the situation of the picture, but would assume it's taken in 1957 since that's the newest car in the photo... Isn't it odd that there are 4 '57 Chevs all pulled over?

Double sided whitewalls were the standard way to make whitewall tires during pre-WWII period. Don't know exactly when they went to single-sided WW tire.

Looks like J V Baldwin Motor Co. on the building and sign above it. If you google the name you find a Chevy dealer in Los Angeles, CA. If you click on the flickr link it brings up the exact photo.

First up is a shot from the Canadian National Exposition (CNE) from 1955. I copied the picture from urbantoronto.ca and it was uploaded and taken by a user on that site also named Brewster. Of note is the Corvette Nomad show car.

The second picture is from The City of Toronto archives, and shows a neat '53 sedan delivery. I would guess the picture is late '54 going by the Buick coming the other way and the licence plate colour.

That "36 was used in a number of movies over the years.t was also used in The Grapes of Wrath. Note thefront door wing vent windows have been removed. At one point the movie cars were sold off and that car is still around.

I still don't have the hang of posting pix; but this link to a 1951 photo shows
several Chevys and Buicks. One of the Chevys is among my favorites.
Another one is missing the.....

Nice pic Bill... I love the old street cars as well. I wonder if that's your '51?

Here's a scene from the Ohio State fair... I think it's surprising that they're not crowded around that beautiful '34!

From one of my Mom's old photo albums... A cousin of hers owned a '58 Impala Convertible. In July of 1960 it is loaded with the boat and ready to go to an Aunt's cottage. Info on the back says the kittens names were Harry, Blondie, Chester, and Duke...just in case you were wondering! I thought the boat should have been loaded the other way... but fuel cost was not a concern(?) !!

Now I know why, when I drive my '32 around, women who look a lot like Cheetah are always smiling at me and waving.

All the Best, Chip

We all have one today. Its called a touch-free car wash. Don't try it with a 1951 today unless you want to shower while going through.
The water will just pour through the vent windows. Don't ask me how I know orangeupset

Was this photo taken before Johnny got the role as Tarzan?

Buster Crabbe was Tarzan for a while there.

Not sure what the date of the photo was, Charlie.

Here's one for today from the Hemmings site. An early '50's COE hauling a nice load of what looks like crunched Oldsmobile(?)...

Anybody know where they'd be ferrying the new '49's? Picture from the Facebook page of Powerglide magazine.
