Hi All, Does anyone actually use the spark button on the dash when driving their 31-32?.
The owners manual says to NOT pull it out when starting, and then says to have the spark and throttle buttons pushed in when driving.
Was the button already obsolete when these models were made??

I think the only time you might want to pull the spark out is when you are going to try crank starting the engine. I never pulled mine out on our 31.

I use mine when starting, even though the manual says not to. With the timing advanced to 18 degrees, as opposed to the original 12 degree setting, it seems to help with cranking the engine over, especially if I use the hand crank. Other than that, it stays pushed against the dash. BTW, this is on a 1930 Coupe.

Definitely pull out the spark knob each time you start the car.

Why would you hand crank the car when you have a starter?

For the same reason George Mallory climbed Mt. Everest - because it's there!
Of course, he died in the attempt.

I wonder why they would say DONOT use the spark button. I use the spark button when using the starter or crank and i can tell a world of diference from not using it at all. Number one, the engine dont kick and number two it cuts down on starter gear grindage dromatically. Ofcource when the engine is hot, the spark button is no longer needed. This is on a '32 BA.

Thank you to everyone who answered this post, I wonder the same as OilSpot does, why does the owners manual say not to use it? Does the 1929 and 1930 owners manuals say to Use the spark button ? or not to use it???

The earlier owner's manuals also mention not to use the spark button. I think it is a typo because, as OilSpot mentioned, there is a great advantage to using the spark button on a cold start up.
