Can any one tell me what pursose the upside down cup shaped stamped steel washers or as the Chev parts book calls them collars have? They fit around the valve guide but are much to small on the O.D. to serve as a spring guide. They are used on most 1929-36 Chevs. Thanks

I would guess they serve two functions.Act as a stop when the original stepped type guides are installed and help center the spring on the bottom.Later engines (also used on some 1934-36 engines when straight guides are installed) use a cupped shaped seat to keep spring positioned.235's have a recess in the head for this purpose.
