Greetings,
The transmission of my 1929 has a modern-type grease nipple in the top surface of the universal joint ball retainer, where the speedo cable exits. Apart from being almost impossible to access, this seems strange as I thought this compartment is just common to the trans and shares the oil. The height of the filler hole would, though, mean that oil only just gets into this compartment. Is it normal to have a grease nipple at that location?
Thanks,
Dave

Originally, there was an 1/8" pipe plug at that location.

Thank-you JunkYardDogJunkYardDog. The cloaked message you send me is that my car is not original!!!

I don't know about a 29 but the 28 shop manual says that after overhauling the transmission or replaceing the U joint that hole is used to put some lubricant into and it didn't say anything about putting a plug back in, at least to the best of my memory, which is almost eaten up with a case of CRS..... The purpose to immediately lube the U joint would be my guess.
My 28 had an Alemite connection it when I bought it. I also have several transmissions I got that have Alemites. none with plugs.

The 1929-32 Chevrolet literature (including the filmstrips) shows a plug at that location. Several original cars have been documented with the pipe plugs as well. I also have several transmissions with pipe plugs installed.

Upon the initial assembly, the "U" joint ball retainer should be filled with only about 1/2 pint of oil. This area is lubricated from the transmission via the open rear bearing.
