I have a stone guard on my '31. The bowtie emblem fits into a bracket that is connected to the radiator housing by a hex head screw. That screw is as tight as it can go, but the back plate still wobbles and so the bowtie emblem is always crooked.
I began to loosen the bracket but got scared and stopped because I can't see if that screw goes into a nut someplace in the back where I can't see it and by removing the screw, the nut will fall into some "black hole" and I'll never see it again!If I knew I could safely remove the screw then all I would need to do is put a washer behind it and it'll tighten up.

Can someone tell me how that backplate and screw are attached?

By now you have probably purchased a complete set of 1931 Chevrolet Service News (12 issues) from the Filling Station. Go to the February, 1931 issue and it gives details and illustrations on how the radiator screen and emblem are anchored.
