i'm a good friend of billy clements, owner of now defunct ChevyCraft, a salvage buisnees in lubbock,tx which specialized in 55-57 chevys. i visited the junk yard several times in the 80's and 90's. There was only one non-shoebox chevy out in the junk yard when i visited there and it was a 58 chevy that billy claimed was the old buddy holley 58. knowing billy, oh well, i better not go there. buyer beware. mike

Mike,
I fully agree with the Caveat Emptor on BS Billy. I met the man several times a few at the salvage yard and many others at swap meets in Texas/OK. I got this strong feeling to grab my wallet and hold on tight but enjoy the stories. I heard that he moved to Florida back in the early 90s.

Billy is still in lubock. after selling chevycraft, he bought a radio station, KDKA , in lubbock. up until about 6 months ago, billy was on air every am from 6 till 10.his humor was broadcast daily and he is one hell of a story teller. of late, he's been experiencing health problems and is off air. he used to come to NCRS regionals and nationals and the stories he told would have the house rolling on the floor. love him but deal cautiously. mike

Now Mike,
I understand that old BS Bill might have bought a radio station but doubt the call letters are KDKA as that is the call sign for the first commercial radio station in Pittsburg, PA. Now I am sure that KDKA came to mind since you habitate that part of the world.

I remember one thing from my days as a college radio DJ the first call letter for any station east of old muddy starts with W and west starts with K so the station in PA would have to be WKDA

John,
When you took your third class radio telephone license test didn't they teach you that except for one station all east of the Mississippi started with W and west of the river K. The exception was KDKA in Pittsburgh, PA. The station still has those call letters. If you don't believe me then google KDKA as see what you find. Maybe when you were a DJ a Third Class license was not required. It was when I was a DJ many, Many years ago. Should still have it someplace. Our campus station was KUMN. The commercial station was KLOS.

The old "rule" of W/K - East/West usually works.

A notable exception is KDKA in Pittsburg, PA. 1020 KDKA was a huge, booming AM station 30-40 years ago when AM music stations were the Kings of the airwaves.

Any radio buffs in here will know KDKA is "where it all began." Billed as the World’s First Radio Station. The first on-air broadcast was Tuesday Night, November 2, 1920 at 6:00pm from a shack atop the Westinghouse Electric Building in Pittsburgh.

Bill.

Hey 42bill! How about KGW in Portland? History states that it is the oldest radio station in Oregon, with a start up date of around March 15, 1922.

Not sure what your point is Junk Y Dog. Nonetheless, as far as I know, what you're saying is correct....

My point is very simple: You were talking about old radio stations and I found it interesting that the oldest radio station in Oregon was in Portland, and you live in Portland. That's about it in a nut shell.

Yes Junk Y Dog, the good old nutshell. It seemed like the earlier posts were more along the line of oldest in the country, not just oldest in Ory-gun. Well, as you say, KGW definitely was the first in the state.

You may recall I worked there in the real hay days of Sixty-Two-Kay-Gee-Double-You' "the music machine." Early 70's to mid-80's. That was one kick-ass station. Huge ratings. Really fun to sell the ads on a station like that. Then later as the Genl Sales Mgr my biggest challenge was exploring how HIGH we could push the rates. And man, I really pushed 'em!! We made a lot of money for the family. Some years our profit matched the TV station's profit. TV grossed a lot more, but some years we brought as much to the bottom line as the TV station did!

I look back on those days with great fondness, memories. Thnx for re-kindling them....

Bill.
