I've read all search material on this subject.I'm still not sure about the finish on the latches and hooks.My car is a 30 business coupe, the latches were very rusted so I can't tell if they were painted or plated.Does the part that's riveted to the hood side get paint or plating?Thanks in advance!Stan

In what factory was your car made? Different factories used different hood latches and the finishes on the hood latches varied factory by factory as well. At any rate, the bracket on the hood matched the finish on the hood latch.

The factory designation is usually part of the "body number" that is on your cowl tag and the factory designation is also part of the car serial number that is on the metal plate attached to the wood main sill by the passenger side door. If you post both of those numbers here then we can tell you in which factory your car was manufactured.

"12AD51923" breaks down as follows:

12 = Buffalo, New York
AD = Universal Series, 1930
51923 = Your car was the 50,923rd car produced in the Buffalo, New York factory in 1930 (Note: serial numbers started at 1001)

30557 = 1930 Standard Coupe

B6910 = "B" is for Buffalo, New York, and "6910" means that your car was the 6,910th Standard Coupe produced in the Buffalo, New York factory.

Now, based on the above information, your hood did not use the "candy cane" type of latch, or brackets. Instead, since your car was built in the Buffalo, New York factory, your hood should have the "T" style of latch (part number 354518) and the corresponding bracket (part number 349534). The finish on both the hood latches and the brackets was cadmium plate.

Hey Dawg,
I just thought all had the candy canes. Beigns there weren't any hold downs on my truck, what would be the right one for it. It was built in the Kansas plant in March of 1930.
Thanks-again.

Your truck, since it was made in the Kansas City factory, would use the "candy cane" style of latch. The part number is 357092 and the finish is black. The corresponding bracket is part number 357091 and the finish on that is black also.

You can see illustrations of the different types of hood latches used in the 1929-32 Chevrolet parts book that is available from the Filling Station.

Thanks. I thought that was the case.
I have found them in the catalogue. I wrote them to ask if they had them that were not chromed. They wrote bakc and said that was all they carried. Should I get the chrome ones and take finish off and paint them or is there some place I can get them bare metalled-before chroming.
Thanks.

Contact Lonny at Stanley's Parts to see if he will sell you some without plating. See the vendor list elsewhere on this site for the address and phone number.

I had written Lonny last year and told me he did not have painted ones available. If I could find old ones that are in working condition, That would be good too. Or I could go with the chrome-but it just wouldn't look quite right.
Any other suggestions?

You can go with the chrome latches and when you receive them, you can take the latches to a plating shop and have the chrome stripped off. The latches unscrew and come apart. Or...you can also bead blast the latches to get the chrome a little rough and then paint them.

Thanks for the pointer. There's a big swap meet in Kansas City I'll see what I can find but if nothing then on to Plan B.
