I took a little drive yesterday in the ole coupe and noticed it was jumping up and down a little on a smooth road. I got home and checked the shocks and the monroe number was 2033. I called monroe and they said that number isn't even used anymore. The last shock with that number was sold 35 years ago !! They gave me a crossover number of 32022. I'm off to buy them today. That should take the bounce out of the ole chevy. I realize it is a straight axle, but I think after 35 yrs or more it might need some new shocks.. GRIN

So your coupe doesn't have the lever action shocks?

No mine ia a master with a straight axle. The deluxe has the lever action shocks and no straight axle. Mine also has no arm rests or visors and no clock or radio and only one wiper. The running boards have no chrome strip. No defrost vents or chrome strips on the dash.I do have two tail lights, I'm no sure how that happened. GRIN

The 1938 Master has single acting lever type front and rear shock absorbers. Single acting means the shock creates resistance in only one direction and that is on the downward stroke.
The Master Deluxe had single acting lever shocks in the rear (1939 and up had double acting-resistance in both directions). The front of the M.D. has the enclosed coil spring knee-action units and the shock is built inti the enclosed unit thus has no lever.
The 1939 and 1940 Master had tube type or airplane type shocks. The originals were Delco brand but other brands made replacements.

The lever shocks were Delco and never made by another brand.

I am willing to be they gave you numbers for 1939-40 tube type shocks. It would be a plus if they could be adapted to the 1938 as the are double acting and would do a lot to decrease the "hop'....the 1938 Master had the hop from new and were never know for a smoooth ride where as the M.D. had a very smooth ride for a 1938 "small" car.

As Gene noted yours came from the factory with single action lever shocks as did mine. I believe the Canadian cars had the tube type shocks according to CanadianTim. My coupe is also a Master with the straight axle and didn't have the clock or radio. It's possible someone converted your car to the tube type shock if you do indeed have that type of shock. It's unlikely it was "born" that way though.

That's strange. The shock brackets look like GM brackets. They are very heavy cast iron type. It doesn't look like a aftermarket bracket, but it could be. The tube type shocks need replacing for sure because the number is 35 yrs old. My rear shocks are also tube type but the brackets look like a aftermarket bracket that bolts on the leaf springs. I think they are not GM for sure.

Your car isn't a Canadian model is it? Post a photo of your front mount and I'll compare to mine.

Yes indeed, I'd like to see how it's set up as well. Maybe if I live long enough for my freshly rebuilt lever shocks to go bad I might convert mine. laugh
