I am looking to purchase one of the zip-up car storage bags for my 1931 Chevrolet Coupe. Would anyone be albe to recommend a vendor that carries one that will fit my car? Has it worked well for you?

For the next couple of years I will need to peroidically store my car in an pole barn that only has a gravel floor until I can find a better location

Thanks!

I have never used them but until then maybe a vapor barrier under your car would help.

How do you keep the condensation down inside one of the bags?

Gator has a good point. For a gravel or dirt floor a vapor barrier under the car with a regular car cover that allows the car to breathe would be the better scenario.

It is my understanding that one needs to place inside the closed car bag, several small bags of disscent that helps to remove trapped moisture.

I do have 2 layers of plastic on the floor of the garage which seems to hold back some of the moisture. Another goal in using closed containment is also to help keep out the mice.

I always thought they would trap gasoline fumes creating a real dangerous situation

Hey 31 Chevy Guy,

I'd be concerned about 'moisture' (condensation ??) inside the bag making a real mess. I'd sure check the 'advertising' on the outside of the box or contact the mfg and see what they had to say about that potential problem.

I store two cars in a detached garage. Cement floor; but no heat and no doubt somewhat damp due to door(s) opening and closing in damp/rainy weather. I cover them; but no bags.

I'd be intersted to hear what you find out......

Bill.

I have seen advertizments of a drive in zip up bag with a fresh air pump that keeps air moving in the bag, and the bag blown up, sorta like the blow up Christmass yard decorations.

John, you said you will need to store the car for periods of time; how long will be these 'periods of time' be?

I am looking to store the 31' for perhaps 3 months at the most. Nothing long term.

I bought a Car Pocket from ShelterKing a couple of years ago and it worked pretty well. You need to put a soft cover over the car first and then close the car pocket. The only thing that bothered me was the build up of gas vapor. I opened the pocket once a week or so to get rid of the gas smell.

The gas tank and lines should be drained before any extended storage. The gas will form gum and varnish which will cause problems in the future. If drained and dried then fumes will not be a problem.

Sadly if he is away for 3 months at a time I assume he will not be able to "air out" the 'bag' to get rid of the fumes weekly.

I agree with the JunkYardDogJunkYardDog, put down a good thick vapor barrier and cover the car with a good quality car cover that breathes. I would suggest also that you 'clean' the interior with a good product that will help combat mold, mildew. If moisture is a major problem in your area maybe someone can suggest something you can put inside the car to keep mold and mildew from setting up camp inside your car.

I guess you will have to go thru the procedure of putting your car into storage 'limbo' like Chip has suggested. I have 'stored' cars like this (under carports, dirt floor, w/barrier & cover) for much longer periods of time w/o any problems. I haven't tried "STA-BIL" (sp?) a gas stabilizer.

PS. You might want to take the weight off of your tires by using some stands or ?.

I think you might be better off buying a good car cover and laying down a vapor barrier. Letting the air circulate to dry is better than sealing the moisture in.

31 Chevy Guy, here is a link to what you are looking for. They are not cheap by any means, but they are a quality item that I have used for several years. They have a fan that keeps them inflated, and circulates air to help prevent mildew and mold it also keeps the fumes down

You might want to consider either a car capsule or a carcoon. I have one of each 1 for my 42 and the other for my Bricklin. They work great and they have survived 2 New England Winters outside.

29chevy,
That link just takes you to the main webpage of California Car Cover. What does he need to search for once he gets there?

31 chevy guy, 29chevy is right, I just got the new California Car Cover Co. catalog and I think they have exactly what you are looking for on page 25, a new item, it is a drive in storage bag that is made to keep out rust, moisture, etc. w/o being plugged in to the elec.

Good Luck.
