A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the
Pierian spring. There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
and drinking largely sobers us again

I have been looking over my 38 Master project and I have noticed thst the floorshift seems to be almost unlimited in the movement sideways. I have tried shifting through the gears and it appears that I can put it in reverse but any of the other positions create a locked up drivetrain. I won't be working on the mechanical aspects for quite a whike but I am curious as to what would cause these symptoms.

Its common for the parts in the shift tower (at base of lever) to be worn. The pieces fit from 1937-1947 and are easy to find.
One after market outfit even made a kit for this.
