That is the correct generator for a 1938 and 1939. The original 1938 regulator had four wires. The 1939 regulator has three wires and is the 1118309. After 1939 if you purchased a new regulator for a 1938 you got the three wire 309 regulator. When installing a three wire on a 1938 the wire for the ignition switch is not used.
The 1938 four wire regulators are very scarce as they were made for only one year, not too good to begin with, and most have been replaced with the three wire. Also the four wires sell for more than the car is worth.

The 5814 regulator continued to be the regulator on all 1939 chevs sold here in Australia.
( I have one Made in Canada and one Made in USA )
It also may have continued in Canada, as i have the small green 1939 Canadian workshop manual which has the 4 wire regulator diagram as well.
The US 1939 workshop manual only has the 3 wire diagram.

My 38 shop manual shows a 4 wire regulator but the 41 manual shows a 3 wire regulator so at some stage between the Aus production caught up with the US. I didnt check the regulator numbers though.

fast38eddy,
Thanks for your response. If you or anyone could tell me,I would surely appreciate knowing which of the four wires is not used with the three lug regulator.

When I was growing up, my best friend was knick-named fasteddy. Hearing from you makes me think of him and some great memorires.
Thanks again,
Fred Marc

TonyW.

I have a GM-H printed 1940 workshop manual( printed 1941 for the Autralian Army with 1941 truck suppliment) and it has
the 1940 wiring diagram with a 3 connection voltage regulator.

The US 1940 and up voltage regulators all had three wires....but was very different from the 1939 three wire VOLTAGE CONTROLL. The 1939 and prior years have a three brush GENERATOR and the 1940 and up have a two brush.

Thanks again for eveyone's help. I hooked up the 1100004 generator and the three lug 309 regulator, leaving out the "ign" wire. It seems to charge just fine.
How much noise does this generator make when charging? The generator has been mounted without wiring for a long time and I have run the car a lot moving it around my property and never heard any noise from the generator. Now that its charging a pretty low battery, I hear "whizzing" noise.
Thanks,
Fred Marc

The generator, unlike an alternator, should not make more noise when charging. Sounds as if the commutator is a little rough in the area where the brushes ride. Will get better with use if that is the problem.

I believe the (IGN.) wire gets taped back and is not used.

Hi Fred,
I think there's lots of Fast Eddy's out there! I got nicknamed that from my long time buddy's Frat brothers because I always came to the Frat parties with a different gal. cool
The 38 part found its way in there for my 38 Chevy. I'll look up the wiring stuff and get back to you since I am at work now.
Cheers!
Jim
