Looking for a original crank hole cover for my 1928 AB national, any help would be great.

If you don't find an original one they are in reproduction.

The filling station has a reproduction, but the price is outrageous. There is noting special about the machining that makes it worth what they are asking. It is just a round slug of metal with a fastener on the back.

I am sure that the Filling Station and other '28 owners that need a crank hole cover would be delighted to have the opportunity to purchase a reproduction for less. If you or you can find someone to make them that would be great.

As I said in another post, you have to pay to play and I appreciate the position the Filling Station is in. And i have no problem paying a fair dollar for a repro part. But this one is over the top. If they can sell a repro motometer for $45 and a round slug for %50...

Steve from The Filling Station here. I thought I should at least put in my two cents worth. The comparison you make regarding a "slug" is not quite accurate. The fellow that makes this part is here in the USA. He makes small runs and his quality is excellent. The part is made out of solid aluminum. It is machined and polished and is a very nice part which we are proud to sell. Yes, the cost is high, but have you taken anything to a machine shop lately? Most places are charging $65.00 per hour for labor. I invite you to have a few made and see what they will cost.

Your comparison to the Moto Meter is not a fair comparison. That part is also beautiful and yes, less expensive than the crank hole cover. However, it is made in Taiwan in large quantites. This keeps the price down. If you made large quantites of 1928 crank hole covers you would have them for a very long time.

The bottom line to all of this is that we have 350 suppliers from all over the country and the world that make parts for us. Some are one man shops and some are large corporations. The reason they are willing to make these parts is so they can sell them and make a profit. If you can't make a profit in business, then you'd better really like what you are doing and, oh ya, have an endless supply of money too. :)

Be glad that we can restore our cars because of the folks that are willing to manufacture all the little obscure parts for the hobby. I know dozens of them, just within the VCCA membership. My hat goes off to all of them.

I really don't know what you have been using for a crank hole cover for your 1928 AB national. I have the original on my 28 sedan and it is more like a radiator cap , with fine threads, than a slug. It screws on to the radiator cover and appears to be nickel plated brass with a black painted insert.

Steve, I had no intention to offend and yes i do appreciate that you guys at the filling station keep to high standards and i respect that, but i am still not going to purchase the part for that price from anyone. i spent many years in retail and I feel that it is important that you the vendor know what i am thinking and what i am willing to pay. It can only make our relationship stronger.

So in the end I too am looking for a cover for my 28. I hope the swap meet Gods are kind to me this summer. If not, it will wait longer.

No offense taken. I have been in retail all of my life, starting at the ripe old age of 12. I worked for my father in his grocery stores and learned from the bottom up. One of the things I learned is that the customer speaks very loudly with what is not purchased. I do not set the prices that our vendors charge to make parts. But I do have to make a profit on what we sell. Good luck with your search.
