Hi cars, The source of most leaks on the 1928 engine is the timing gear cover. It is usually installed with the screws overtightened and leave places for the oil to seep through and drop after the engine is shut off. Removal of the cover and reinstalling is the only cure. If you don't have any oil pressure There are several things you can do to re-establish the pressure. Try priming the pump by opening a connection and with an oilcan force some oil down the lines to the pump. You can remove the distributor and use a drill to power the pump. You may also remove the pan to inspect the pump and prime it. This is also a good chance to insure the pan is secured so you don't have leaks. The front pulley is removed by use of a puller. It is a press fit on the crankshaft. When finished it is driven on and finished when in contact with the cam gear.

Cars, Although the postings for oil leaks about the timing cover are correct in frequency and commonality, I had a terrible time with oil leaks at both ends of the oil pan, at the cork gasket. The original gasket has a tendency to “roll-into” the oil pan at the ends, creating a path for leaks. I tried everything to prevent this from happening, but with no success. Finally, I purchased a strip of oversize cork, thicker than the original cork. I placed the cork in a Bridgeport mill, chucked-up an Exact-o blade in a collet, and with the blade aligned in the direction of travel, I was able to cut a flange in the cross-section of the seal. The flange prevented to cork from slipping into the oil pan. I also followed the typical practice of cleaning the entire gasket mounting surface with solvent, staring fluid and carb cleaner work best. I sprayed the bearing caps with 3M-77 (no over spray) and pre-curve the cork by tie-wrapping it around a small can. I changed the gasket 4 times before trying this approach. I can change a gasket in under an hour, no lift, and minimal space. I’ not bragging, it’s an acquired skill that I wish I didn’t acquire. I can send you drawing if you want, or even a set of flanged seals.

After thoroughly degreasing the bearing cap groove I use a very small dab of contact cement, one on each end and one in the middle. It will not move when placing the sump back on. Chris
