I apologize for asking this because I think it's been asked and answered before--I'm just not able to find the post.

What are the different colors for accessories the 36 engine? I have darker gray paint for block, head, etc. What is supposed to be black? I realize generator, distributor, carburetor, and coil are supposed to be black.

What about the fan and the oil vent tube/filler? What about the water pump and fuel line (unpainted)? Are the brackets for the generator black? The transmission is black-I assume the bell housing is gray?

Thanks!

Transmission - black
Bellhousing engine color.
Top generator adjusting bracket engine color.
Lower bracket black
water pump and pulley engine color.
fan and oil filler/breather black.
fuel lines not painted.
Oil distributor valve and exposed portion of oil line above housing - engine color
Intake manifold engine color as were as bolts and hardware that hold it in place.

The 1936 proving ground pictures show the oil filler and fan as gray. A low milage original 1936 I saw a few years ago had black and my 1934 and several others I saw had black from the factory.

Chevgene,

How well does the engine paint hold up on intake manifold. I'm wondering if there might be a heat problem from the exhaust manifold.

The paint will hold-up good on the intake manifold. Just make certain that the heat riser is working and is not stuck in the warm-up position as this will cause hot exhaust gas to continually pass through the center "box" of the intake manifold.

Do these color locations apply to all 194 - 207 Early 6 cylinder Chevy engines?

I would say so. If there is any thing different on the pre-1932 engines some one will mention it.(I hope)

Okay, will do:

For 1932 the generator bracket on the engine block was engine color. The fan blade, generator pulley, exhaust manifold and the oil filler tube were also engine color.

The above has been documented on original, unrestored cars. However, having said that, some factories did have the fan blade and the oil filler tube painted black. For judging purposes either black or engine color should be considered correct.

For 1931 the engine colors are generally the same. Both black and engine color fans and oil breathers were used. Most if not all generator bottom brackets were black (apparently the bracket was attached to the generator and then it was installed on the engine) and the support arm was engine color.

I have seen several 1929-32 generator brackets that were engine color, and when I removed them there was no paint under the generator bracket or on the engine block flange which would indicate that the bracket was on the engine when the engine was painted.

I think that it would be easier for the factory to install the bracket on the engine without the generator than it would be to try to get the bolts in place to install the bracket with the heavy generator attached.

Thanks for everyone's input. I painted most of the engine yesterday--going with black fan and oil filler. I wonder if variations could be accounted for by different factories or different times of production within the year? Such as Gene mentioning the proving ground pictures showing fan and oil filler painted engine color on the 36, but existing original cars having these painted black. Would the pictures have been done in the early part of the year?

Ah, the mysteries in life.....Actually in 1936 all the engines were made in Flint and shipped all over the country from there.
It is my "feeling" that the fan and oil filler were installed after the engine arrived at the assembly plant. With these two pieces missing it would have prevented them from damage and taken less space.

We all need to consider that the proving ground and other "factory photos" can be pre-production vehicles. Many were assembly "mules" or hand assembled vehicles and otherwise not representative of "production" vehicles. So relying solely on those documents is not wise. Yes they are valuable information but other documentary verification should be used.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Chevgene answered your question way back up the line.

Your question was also answered in the 12-28 forum.

Eastwood makes a nice high temperature paint for exhaust manifolds. It's a gray cast iron color and it looks good brushed on. Strongly urge you to grit blast the manifold super clean before painting or the rust will come through.
Mine needs a touch-up but lasted for 4 to 5 years.

Thanks.... guess I need a little help navigating. I don't find an entry under 12/28.... nor do I find Chevgene has any entries..... "searched" again.

Any advice apprecited. Have the manifold off now and would be a good time to paint them... or powder coat.

If I recall, they are not black but silver??

Went over to NAPA this afternoon but not sure about the color yet. Good suggestion on the sand blasting.. will do.

What do you think about powder coating. Found a guy this afternoon who will do each wheel including grit blasting for $50 each.
