First of all Thanks for the head leaking water tips and it had two cracks. Now I have another problem, I installed and god surfaced head and have no leaks but when adding water to the radiator I heard snaping sounding and checked the head and the long head bolt at the rear of the head broke. The rest of the bolts are secure and I used copper seal spray on the gasket so the seal is perfect.Do you think I can get by with just seven since there is no water or oil ports nearby

I would not try it.
If the bolt broke just under the bolt head you maybe able to remove it with a left twist drill considering everything should be free. You can then put a replacement bolt in without removing the head.

Sorry for your problem with the broken bolt. It is a good illustration of one of the problems using used bolts that might be stretched. It is easy to check for stretching. Just take two bolts and line them up threads to threads and heads in opposite directions. If all the ridges and valleys don't exactly fit into the other bolt, at least one of the bolts is stretched!

The bolt broke half way up the threads so the remaining portion is even with the block.I was going to try a long shank drill then use a screw extractor taped to a long i/8 drive socket? What do you think? Thanks Tony

Chip, you are correct and I did just that and there were no signs of streching but I missed a fracture. Honestly do not know of any new head bolts for the 28 or I would have used them.Have been building small blocks Chevies for the last 45 years and this is a first for me.Thanks for the FYI

That should work. The tough part will be to center the drill in the broken bolt end so you don't chew up the block threads. Can you use a piece of tubing to help center the drill bit?

Wrapping 2" tape on the shank of the drill equal to the ID of the hole should center the drill?

Dang if that shouldn't work also. Great thinking. Guess I need to redial my brain to "simple" mode.
