Since I do not have a complete original gas tank from my '34 (top sheet metal is cut out) I do not know if there was a vent line. I am getting ready to install a reproduction tank that does have one. Is it necessary or will the tank vent at the gas cap? The reason I ask is that I'm not sure there is enough room above the tank next to the frame for the fitting required.

Also, I am planning on installing some rubber strips between the straps and tank but is there something I need to put between the top of the tank and the frame? Any other suggestions will be appreciated!

I am not sure of the correct setup with the vent pipe but in most cases where there is a vent at the top of the tank it generally joins into the filler neck just inside the outer panel opening and from the top. If the neck has a smaller pipe joining into it that will be for tank vent. If there is no connection into the filler neck I would probably solder a blanking cap on the connection out of the tank.

As for the strips between the tank, straps and body I would be putting some in, no matter how tight you do the straps the tank will always move a little. A common type of material for the strip is an old tyre inner tube held in place with a contact adhesive to prevent it slipping sideways. Someone may have a better suggestion though.

In 1934 no vent pipe was used...not "invented" as yet.
The vent pipe allows air to escape from the tank when it is being filled. The cap gap allows air to enter as gas in consumed so a vented gas cap is necessary. In 1934 all caps were vented and make sure you use a vented cap.

I am planning on welding the end of the original filler pipe to the new one so I can use the original cap, so I think I will just cap the vent hole on top of the new tank. Thanks for your replies!!

If you insulate the tank from the frame be sure to provide a ground wire or the gas sending unit/gauge will not work.
