The backup light switch mounts in position so that when the manual transmission ,1st & reverse shifting lever arm or the powerglide shifting arm on the column is in reverse the switch will make connection. The backup switch mounting bolts can be adjusted to make that shifter operate the arm on the switch, simular to the way that switch on the firewall operates the stop lights, when the brake peddle is operated.
Don't the back up light kit have instructions? I have one somewhere for my 51 that does have mounting and operating instructions.

I think that because there is some "play"when I shift, the switch lever does not stay up (in contact)and the light only stays on if I "hold" the lever up...There is a spring and nut adjustment on the switch and thought that is for adjustment???chef

Chef, I will have to say I don't know about adjusting the backup switch on your car, it has vacuum shift, right? It may very well be the same as the manual shift linkage. If I remember correctly the adjustment on a manual shift car needs a well maintained shift arm rods and levers. I replaced the bushings on the rods, and the box on the column because I had a couple of times the shifter tried to ne in a couple of gears at once. My backup light switch workes fine but I disconnected the power from it because I considered the backup lights to be ineffective.

I have the instruction sheet for installing the back-up light and switch. In addition to showing the wiring diagram, it does discuss the adjustments necessary to make sure the switch only comes on in reverse. That's the purpose of the two nuts on the arm, so you can shorten or lengthen the arm to contact only the reverse lever. Hopefully, after you look at it, it will make sense. I'll email you a copy. Will also post under VCCA Member's Photos. I think you can download and copy in full size from there...
