A few weeks back we wre discussing the paint and insulation on the under side of trunk lids. The question was is the under side painted under the black insulating material that is glued to the surface. Due to the break in our cold weather I was able to inspect both my 1939 and 1950 lids. The exterior color is under the insulation and you can see where the glue that holds the insulation was applied over the paint. The question then is how did they get the insulation between the inner structure and outter panel as the space is very tight. Was the under side of the outter panel painted and the insulation glued on and then the inner structure put in place and the two fastened together? The two are pressed together on the outter edges.

You just described the inside of the Trunk on my 41, coupe.

I have been looking for a long time for a suitable product to replace the "insulation/material" So far, no luck.

Any one know where I might find some material the closely resembles the original ?

Thanks

Great question, Michael! As I just installed the trunk lid on my '48, I saw that the insulation material is in need of replacement. Seems like I remember seeing someone selling it years ago, but haven't looked recently. I'm hoping someone out there can provide a source.

The underside of my 38's deck lid had what looked like tar paper on it. That is what I tried to glue back after the re-paint but the glue lifted the paint. I ended up spraying the areas with undercoating.

Just thinking out loud, could they have placed the insulation material in before they skinned it?

That would be my thought but they would have marred the paint when the installed the skin.
