Are these two distributors interchangeable? First number 1112363, Second Number 1112403. The latter is from 1958 Chev 235. The previous is from 1951-52 235 based on the engine casting numbers. V/r

The 1951 distributor will work in a 1958, that is the engine will run, but has a different advance curve, is of the old design with the low dist. cap, and the gear is made from the incorrect material and could possibly eat-up the gear on the camshaft. Try to find a distributor from a 1955-1962 235.
Sounds like I am going to have to do the same thing with my 48 as I think the distr is 48 into a 62 block. Will have to check #s on present distr. Don't want the gear on cam going out. Still running 6 volt system on mine.

The 6 volt and 12 volt distributors are really the same. The 1954 Power Glide was the first to have a cast gear but I didn't include it in the above. IIt could be "added" to the above list.
I just happened to come across a book this morning listing these distributor numbers so thought I'd post them for interest's sake.
1112363 1951-1952 Chevrolet 6 cyl.all models Powerglide 1951-1952 Chevrolet trucks 6 cyl. all models 2 Ton
1112403
1955-1962 Chevrolet all models 6 cyl. 1955-1960 Chevrolet trucks all models 6 cyl. I would think trucks probably up to 1962 also but this book only went to 1960 on trucks. Neil

As the stock of older distributors became depleted from GM's stock the substituted newer numbers to cover the old models. By the later 1960's they got down to having one distributor cover all 6 cylinder applications from 1940-1962 and that was the 1112403 model. This replaced the 1941-early 1948 models with the reversing switch, covered all advance curves, was a late style dist, with the high cap and had the cast iron gear. It became a universal fits-all and GM really didn't care.
Been a week or so, thanks for the information. Based on that, I put back the banged up 58 distributor. Don't want to end up walking if this thing ever starts. Ironic huh?
