chef-chevy - someone makes a set of punches for big holes. I have a set that goes up well beyond one inch. You could find a hunk of one inch tubing and sharpen one end to make your inside cut.

Why don't you buy a gasket from the Filling Station? They have them listed in their catalog and the gasket is only a couple of bucks.

I posted a picture of the gasket for the Durex fuel filter. Notice that the filter gasket is not just an "O" ring cork type of shape. It is a round gasket piece with alot of small holes in it.

on my filter the the center section of the top protrudes outwards and the filter element fit around it .That's why there needs to be a 1" cut out in the middle and over all it is 2-1/4 " round ...If you look closely at the pic with the fitting you can see the outline of where the element was but mine must be cut out there to fit over the interior lid...I guess if I use a punch to cut inside and outside and then punch some small holes between the two it should work....Being the Chef I tried biscuit cutters my just work...p.s. don't know about the filling station but the only filter gasket Chev's of the 40s has is for the re-pro ac filter and it only uses an bowel gasket.the durex need a seal for both the bowel and the element

I like it when I wake up to a first, and this is the first time I've heard of a Durex filter. Ya'll got me goin and I'll probably spend a couple of hours now researching this, but I wonder if we could fill in the blanks for those of us that weren't aware of them.
Were these filters ever installed on the commercial vehicles? And were they sold as an accessory by the dealer or installed at the factory? Does anyone have a picture of the complete filter installed? And lastly, are they being reproduced?
I'm just full of questions this mornin', ain't I!

Denny take a look at 1948chevycm accessories, you will see the filter there...It is very close to the AC re-pro filters sold by Chevs of the 40s but the filter element is a casting of porous brass or copper(not paper)the element is held in place with a spring

Other than a couple of hours to shovel out the driveway, I’ve been at that link all day Chief. That is unbelievable that anyone could amass that many accessories and the work on that convertible is just as unbelievable. I’d really like to see that car when it’s finished. I didn't notice any names, is that your car?
Thanks for the link, and now I know what a Durex filter looks like, I’m assuming that there is just a glass bowl under the housing? And from the narrative, it sounds like they were using the sintered metallic filter elements even back then. I didn’t think those started showing up until the late 50’s.

The correct Durex gasket is actually two gaskets in one. The center portion seals the filter to the filter housing. The outter portion seals the glass to the housing. The slots or holes in between the inner and outter allow the gas to pass through. The originals were rather thick and there are two sizes . One for 1947-48 and one for 1950-54....if I remember correctly the 1950 and up was a litter smaller in diameter. The filter bowl was also 1/2" shorter.

Chev Nut you are amazing my man....So correct...I have 2 of the smaller ones and one is NOS with the gasket you are speaking of which I tried to describe above...Of course it is deteriorated into 4 or 5 pieces...I also have a larger one that is exactly the same but it is an AC...As you notice Chevy B's pic of the filter has a wing nut to tighten the bowl, none mine have that nut. They have bent rods around the bowl and are tighten by a thread rod,cap washer and horizontal, thin nut

If it has the wire bail it is not a correct Filter for a 1948. The correct filter will have the hole in the bottom of the blow and stud with winged nut......which also requires a little gasket. I have one sitting right in front of me.

I emailed you a picture of the filter.

I would need to see the filter. Carter made filters with a wire bail - for many years.
The GM AC with the wire came out in 1956. Was standard on a few models and available for most as an add-on. Thats the same basic one as the Filling Station and others sell today. Very common to see one on about any year. I had one on my '34 and never lost a point over it.

This Carter filter is one version of the many that Carter made. Later ones were painted red. The Carter was never installed by Chevrolet but was a very popular aftermarket replacement. The Carter overhaul kit always had something like "always install a new Carter fuel filter after overhauling carburetor" and seeing Chevrolet never installed a filter on the years Carter carbs. were used there was a good market for filters. Some of these had a white stone filter element.

The AC was standard equipment on some Chevrolet 8 Cyl engines starting in 1956. The filter was standard equipment on all dual 4 Barrel carburetor cars but was slightly differet as the top of the casting was dome shapped. The pleated paper filter element is a modern thing. The original element was brown, smooth, and looked like moulded paper. This filter was never factory installed on 6 Cyl engines but on some 8 cyl with 4 Bbl carbs. Was sold by Chevrolet and could be mounted on just about anything.

The Durex Moraine was not a Chevrolet installed filter. There again it was made for the aftermarket.

The last Moraine was sold by Chevrolet as an accessory from 1947-1948. A new version came out in 1949 and was sold as an accessory from 1949-1954. This version had a 1 inch high glass bowl and the 1947-48 had a 1 1/4" high bowl. The later one was slightly smaller in diameter also. The late one was also sold under different accessory numbers after 1952 as the filter required different angled fitting (they cane with the filter)for different applications due to the automatic choke housing being in the way or the location of the fuel inlet on the carburetor.

From the picture I can not tell if the last Durex is the 1 1/4" or the 1" but I can tell by looking at one "in person"....I have a 1 1/4" one in front of me now.

I have a new Carter filter gasket for $6 postpaid if someone can use. This fit the tall red top filter, which I used on my 41 years ago. It is 2-1/16" dia w/ center hole 15/16" and has 4 oval longated slots between outer edge and inner circle. Made of rubber(?). If interested drop me an email rbholzaaqcm

Here we go again... he is looking for more repop parts.

You are full of more than just questions Denny .

Based on your past negative experiences with reproduction parts...
I am gonna say you should be trying to locate an original GM NOS unit .

Not only will you be happier with the part, it will save you from having to compose another long winded thread about how bad reproduction parts are.

Denny... you are a good source for info. & I really enjoyed your links to the heater control valve rebuild.

Sometimes you give off mixed messages though when you claim to be a preservationist yet constantly post topics about crappy Chinese repop parts you can't get to fit.

I remember you requesting informaion on original sway bars for AD trucks & after everyone dug out all the info. on the original parts & scanned & posted it here.... you bought the cheapo aftermarket part anyway.

I remember you complaining about not getting a Chinese repop gas tank to fit your AD truck.

Then we got the cheapo Chinese bumper guards that don't fit your bumper.

Then I see a post here about you looking for reproduction fuel filters when there are alot of NOS units still out there.

I was under the impression that the VCCA was a group of restorers that always try to use original GM parts on our restorations..... if the VCCA mission now includes hangin' ill fitting cheapo repop parts from China all over our restorations.... Please let me know.

I have skinned knuckles from actually goin' out & working on old Chevies & NutJob has a sore butt & carpal tunnel from sitting in front of his computer typing about it.

So what is the conclusion of this topic?
Is Denny gonna hunt down a NOS GM AC unit ? or is he gonna send $$$ to Taiwan for his fuel filter ?

Hey MT! You got something you wanna sell?
as for me I am so broke that i can't hardly pay attention. Where have you been for my last 2 or 3 thousand posts? We been missing your cheerful old Advanced Design Truck self! carrot I really didn't know that anyone really get's into those add on Durex settlement bowl & fuel filter combos. I have several of the originals that didn't have filters in them, and a 5 gallon bucket of assorted others, AC, Modline or is it Moline ones in good used condition that I picked up for nothing at salvage yards. I usually take them to Swap meets and trade them for old junk Rochester Model B & BC carbs and Stromberg 2 barrels. Some of us old codgers live where there are 4 seasons and rather than burn a lot of firewood or cow chips we spend some daylight hours and nights relapseing in front of Hulett Puckeard. Try it you may learn something useful. computer computer
