I'm doing a body off restore of a 54 handyman 150. I have the body off and working on the frame.
The engine # is 047757 F54Z,
and that is the # on the registration and title. On the forward driver post is a rectangular tag, with the word chevrolet and under it the # A540048691. I also found this # stamped on top of the left side frame rail in 2 places both in the area of the drivers door. these two stamps cannot be seen unless the body is removed. Which is what?
another # I would like to find out about is on the inside vertical surface near the end of the right side frame rail
the # is 7-28-54, is that the birthday number?
thanks for any help you can give me. I've read thru many of the previous post and have already gotten plenty of great info. greg

Greg,
This is the first time I have heard of a serial number stamped on the top of the frame rail on a 1954. The 1955-57 is that way.
The date would be the day-month the frame was made. There were two or three suppliers for the frames as they were not all made by Chevrolet.
The F would indiacte the engine was made in Flint, 54 the year of the engine and Z indiactes its a regular passenger car 115 HP engine - but you may have already known that.

Tks Gene for the info. That # on the door post and the top of the frame rail still has me puzzled. If the first year that the #'s were imprinted on the rail was 55, could these on a 54 be a test run of their stamping equipment? the mfg frame date was 7-28-54, near the end of the production run for 54 but before retooling for the next year could this be anywhere near the possible explanation for these #'s. Just a guess. thanks
