Can anyone tell me how I fill the reservoir on the top system of my 66 Impala. The lines are clear, the pistons are empty. There doesn't appear to be any way to get fluid into either the pump or pistons. I'm obviously not an expert, but I didn't think I was this dumb that I can't figure this out. As always, thanks in advance for even reading this.

I think I am right on this. Behind the back seat you will find the power top pump. It is mounted in three rubber motor mounts. Remove the pump from the mounts so you can access the back of the pump. The large nut is removed and fill with liquid of choice (transmission fluid, brake fluid, 10 W oil). Replace the nut, cycle the system and repeat. You indicated the two pistons were dry, so continue to recycle and fill until you can no longer add any liquid.

Would'nt that indicate a leak if it is empty?

He does not specify the situation. Could be initial installation or as you suspect it may be a leak. In any case it will need to be filled some in order to find the leak.

I have already found the pump (just where Ray stated). I have it out of the car. My problem is that on this particular pump, the only access I see is by way of a triangular headed bolt that secures the reservoir to the pump. If I take this out, I can easily fill the reservoir but have no way to keep the fluid from leaking out because the seal tween the pump and reservoir will be loose.

When I bought the car, there were numerous air pockets throughout the system. I drained the fluid and blew out the lines. As best as I can tell, there are no leaks in the lines, pump, or pistons. I wish I could figure out how to send a picture of what I have to make this easier for all. Again, thanks for the prompt responses.

I went and looked at the 66 Impala here in the collection and there is a black rubber plug in the end of the resevoir near the top. That would be the fill plug I do believe. If you need, I can send a picture. Andy

I'll try that approach. I wasn't sure that the plug was one that could be easily removed since it has a rather large collar on the inside. I saw this when I had the top off of the reservoir.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
