The 1931 Chevy engine I'm rebuilding arrived with a Delco-Remy Model 644D distributor, which I know is wrong. I have an extra 633G which I will rebuild and install on it. But what applications use the 644D?

Thanks in advance!

All the Best,
Chip

My book says a 645G is a 1935.

Gene Yes I have a Master 645G (682821) Distributor and if it is truly for a 1935 that might explain why I have had difficultu mating up the oil piump, since the distributor shaft is female and my oil pump was also female, I had to retrofit my oil pum shaft to a male end.

The 1929-1935 oil pump/distributor connection were all the same. Female slot at the end of the distributor shaft with the oil pump being male. The 1936 was the odd ball and was just reversed. The 1936 distributor was a 645T.
I would suspect your oil pump was incorrect.

I agree about the incorrect oil pump. The 1935 645G distributor should have a female end and it should fit in the 1933 Master engine block since the correct oil pump for that engine has a male end.

Gene-I appreciate yours and JunkYardDogJunkYardDog`s help on this matter. What I have is a new 1936 oil pump with female shaft and gear and when I noticed that the 645G distributor shaft was also female I then exchanged the shaft and gear on the oil pump to a male. As long as I get good oil pressure, do you see any reason that this won`t work or in your opinion should I start over and get the 644D distributor and change the oil shaft back? the engine has been completely rebuilt assembled, painted but hasn`t been installed on the chassis or started yet.

As long as you have sufficient oil pressure (lubricates the valve train and above zero pressure at idle) and the distributor works, it is okay.

You said that you changed the shaft and the gear. In so doing I assume that you have a later replacement gear type pump(s). The original 1933 and 1936 oil pumps were the vane type, a rotor with vanes supplied the pressure, no gears. After about 1940 Chevrolet sld the gear type pumps as replacements for the vane pumps used in 1936 and prior.
As long as the gears were of the same width everything should be OK.
The original vane pump had a round screen and the replacement gear pump came with an oval screen.
The gear pump will give you about 5 pounds more pressure at most speeds.

I would leave the existing oil pump alone, and if you want your '33 engine to be correct you can go with the original 644D distributor. If being correct is not a priority then you can go with your existing distributor and you shouldn't have any problems.
