I have an ignition switch which works..dangling.
I have a hole in the dash where it goes.
I have a threaded chromed round sleeve that fits the ignition switch.
The switch is loose in the hole.

That suggests that a piece is missing that goes on the switch behind the dash. Yes?

What is the piece and where can I get it?

The round chromed threaded part, I have, is the bezel.

It sound like you should have a flat nut that would go on the switch before you put it in the hole on the dash you could use the nut to adjust how much comes through the dash and them you would put the chrome bezel on and tighten it.

Normally I would agree but a nut will not hit the dash and position the switch.

If you shoot a picture of what you have, I can compare it to my 66 Chevelle.

Is your ignition switch the orignal Delco switch? Original switches do not require a back up nut to adjust the thread length. Your instrument panel should have a locater notch in the bottom of the hole. The original switch has a tab for that hole. The thread length should be short enough to allow the bezel to pull the switch tight against the instrument hole. After market replacement switches require the back adjustment nut because they are designed to fit several different applications.
