Hi, I am wondering what would be a typical serial number for a coupe? Is it different than a 4 door or a 2 door sedan? And how do I read the number for manufacture location and style of car or are they all the same?Did every plant make all models ? Thanks for the help,SAL

A 1940 Chevrolet Business Coupe would have been made in 2 different deluxe models. Master Deluxe has no chrome around the windshield and no chrome on the sides of the car at the beltline. Special Deluxe does have chrome trim around the windshield glass. It also has chrome along the sides of the car at the beltline. Special Deluxe is a KA model and Master Deluxe is a KH moddel.
VIN numbers are found under the front floor mat on the passenger side, just in front of the front seat mounting bracket. The numbers on this aluminum identification plate should be something like: 6KA03 17xxx. Why don't you post the numbers/letters here on Chevy Chatter and we can decipher them for you. I would encourage you to put in the xxx's like I have in the example listed above. The world does NOT need to know your exact ID number.

Thanks for getting back with me.I have looked on the floor board and no tag it looks like it was there at one time but has rusted away around the rivet holes. So that is my problem.I do not know if the motor is original. And the numbers that should be by the distributor are unreadable.I hear that when an engine was replaced back than that the blocks came from the factory without numbers and the serviceman was to stamp in the same as the engine number he was replacing. The cowl tag is still intact and has numbers on it. I was wondering if that will help .Thanks SAL
