I picked up a nice set of horns at a swap meet and will mount them on my 38. I believe, however, that I'm missing a couple pieces for correct mounting. I have the piece that straddles the firewall to radiator support and the horns lay in there perfectly. At each end there are three holes and it looks like there must be a bottom part of that bracket that bolts on at each end around the support. This is obviously how the horns are secured to the support. I am missing those pieces. Can they be built or bought anywhere? What do they look like? Are they shaped like clamps?

Second point: there is a small yoke through which each horn passes not far from the base of the horns. Around one of these holes there remains the remnants of some sort of grommet or gasket-like material (obviously rubber of some sort). Is that right--were there grommets around the horn tube at that location? If so, are these available or what have you used for replacement?

Thanks,

Jim

The missing clamps are flat steel about the thickness of the cross bar. They are bolted under the cross bar and are cut at an angle at the end, same as the cross bar. The three bolts go through them and they are round head bolts with a slot.
Large rubber gromets are used where the horns pass through. They are available in reproduction and I believe the Filling Station sells them,
There is another brace that is bolted to the firewall and runs up at an angle to the bracket the rubber gromets are in. Its just flat steel and easy to make. I can't get at mine right now and will be on tour till next Sat.

Dear Gene,

Thanks much for the reply and clarification. I suspected that there would be some sort of steel plates underneath as you describe. I will check the Filling Station catalog for the grommets.

The brace to the firewall that you describe is there, so I have that covered.

Thanks again,

Jim

Hi Jim,

If you search for "horns" in the 37-42 forums you will get a lot of great details. This is a link to an older post I started and it has a link to even more details on the brace and the horns.

http://vccachat.org/forum/ubbthreads.php...orns#Post125508

If you need pictures of the steel plates let me know. I have the horns off of my '37 Master Coupe right now so it will be easy to do.

Take care,

Rusty,

If you don't mind, I too would like a picture of how the brace goes on the T&C horns. I have the brace, but did not want to drill any holes in the wrong place to install it.

Thanks,

Rich

Hi Jim,

I apologize for not giving you a reply sooner. Some days I do not get time to check VCCA Chat. I definitely need to adjust my priorities!

I do not have the firewall brace. I plan to make one. Based on my understanding I have 1937 horns because the long trumpet part is 3/4" diameter.

Yes, I will be glad to send you pictures of the clips. Unfortunately my wife took the camera on vacation. If you can wait I can get them to you later next week.

Once again, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.

Take care,

Rusty,

Thanks; I can certainly wait for the pictures. I only need the metal plates--I have the brace going down to the firewall.

Thanks again,

Jim
