Is there any way to prove that a Impala is a Super Sport in 1968 by the #'s etc? I believe that we have one but have no docs to back it up.

In 1968 the SS was back to being an option, not a model line. Was available only in the convetible and Implal Sport Coupe. It was option # Z03 and was $179.05..Is there a Z03 option stamped into the serial # plate?

03E = I believe your looking at the vehicle build time.

03 = March 1968

E = 5th week. The first of March 1968 fell on a Friday, so the 5th week was the week of the 25th, a Monday.

I believe that you were able to tell if a 68 was an SS or not if it was built in Canada.The Z03 option code most likely would be on the cowl tag.
I recently purchased a 68 SS convertible and from what I've found,an SS has to have Buckets an a console,special door panels with the SS badges,super sport identification on the dash.Outside,special Impala Super Sport emblems on the Grille,Trunk lid and Front fenders.Look for Caprice style tail and back up lights.
BTW Gene,the Z03 option was avaialble for the Sport Coupe,Custom Coupe and Convertible Impalas.

I hope this info helps,in any case enjoy the car!!!

Thanks for the help. The car is going to Vegas to the auction and they will not list it as a SS without documentation. i.e. Build sheet, invoice etc. I guess we'll have to leave it up to the buyer to decide. The car was restored maybe 20 years ago and has all of the right stuff, just no paperwork.

The 1968 advanced technical information shows the SS option for both coupes. Unless it was later revised then it was available for both. I can't recall ever seeing a SS Custom Coupe.
