I have a 1958 Chevrolet Apache, fleetside with a 283, manual. The standards indicate that the color of the engine should be gray. Are there any samples of this gray? Is the gray correct?

Gray is correct and is the same gray used on the 1929-52 pasenger car engines. The Filling Station and Chevs of the '40's both sell the paint.

Hi, I'm the wife. We keep getting different answers so....how do you know gray is correct? Funny thing is, when we called The Filling Station they said the color should be orange! Honestly, we'd like to show the truck when it's done and don't want the judges to tell us the color is wrong or the wrong shade. Soooo I want to make sure it's right. Right?

For Chevrolet truck engine colors go here:

Engine Colors

Note that the listing shows Gray as the engine color for the 1958 283 light duty truck.

Only the passenger car 8 Cyl. engines were orange in 1958. The trucks engines had their own colors and the different colors were used to ID the engines.

The web site with the list is excellent. The problem is there are no samples. As a result there is an open debate as to what is correct. Some on other web sites have argued that a Ford gray is closest, not that I have any sort of problem as to where the paint started from, I just want it correct.

P.S. The wife says thanks for the help.

The dark blue-gray engine paint that the Filling Station sells is correct for 1929-62.

I am presently restoring my 59 3100 pickup and found that Dupli-Color "Universal Gray" engine enamel is the closest to the original color that I have seen. It is extremely durable and it does a great job.
