I have a 59 Chevy Apache with a 283, and I am trying to get reacquainted with auto work. After a 35 year layoff. Anyway, the truck runs fine, but recently has been backfiring a bit. The engine was rebuilt about 7 years ago, and I figure this is probably something simple to try to fix. So two questions. First, is there a book or something I should get so that I don't annoy people with questions? Second, can anybody give me a few things that may be causing the occasional backfires? They occur (when they do) at higher, sustained speeds (50mph+). Running with the choke pulled usually lessens the issue. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would first look at the ignition system for the backfiring at speed. Points/condenser are the most likely. If they are ok then, second would be the carburetor. If there is any restriction in the main jetting then a lean condition at higher speeds could cause the misfiring. If carburetor, one would expect the misfiring to be more regular than ignition. Enriching the mixture (by pulling out the choke) will help with both ignition and carburetor problems.

Does it back fire through the exhaust or carburetor?

Thanks so much for bothering with my questions. Points were relatively recently replaced (4 months ago). Condenser, too. What could cause a restriction in the carb?

You know, that is a great question. The noise is coming from the engine compartment, so does that mean it's coming from the carb? Thanks for the help.
