My Malibu Classic wagon was purchased new on March 13, 1979 from Williams Chevrolet, in Colorado Springs, CO. It was ordered from the factory to get the configuration desired. Although the window sticker came in at $8409.64 the invoice was for $7473.90
This car was in continuous use from 1979 until it was retired in 2008. It was stored outside much of the time from 1987 on. In July 2008 I moved it to the family farm in Nebraska for storage. The engine has never had the heads or pan off and is a very high mileage engine (294,323 when retired). The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt transmission in the 1980’s. Consistent oil changes and other maintenance have resulted in the engine still running well after so many years. After a year of storage it readily started and everything (brakes, power steering, etc.) functioned normally. The car was purchased in Colorado Springs and after a few months in Colorado, it was moved to Tucson for two years and then spent the balance of its driving career in Amarillo, Texas.
Due to the dry mild climates and life on urban pavement, the body and frame are free of any rust outs. It does have some areas where the paint has lifted resulting in surface rust on those spots. There is a dent in the tailgate and each front fender has a small but sharp dent in the top of the fender where something struck them. The car is equipped with standard wheels and Malibu Classic wheel covers.
The car was reupholstered in the late 1980’s, the original vinyl beginning replace with cloth. This cloth has been completely worn out in the front, plus a year of being stored has resulted in further damage from mice. The headliner totally deteriorated and has been removed. The tires are worn out but do hold air. The radio barely plays, no one has tried to play the 8 track in years and the rear defroster no longer works. The brakes are in good condition. The cruise control switch is broken off of the turn signal arm but during the last year of use I discovered if I rubbed my fingers just right over the exposed wires the cruise control kicked in and worked.
During the year of storage from July 2008 to now mice got in the car. I have cleaned out the interior and placed room deodorants in the car. We have also placed Bounce sheets in the car to repel mice and have periodically aired it out, so it is returning to normal. I have the original owners manual, sales invoice, and window sticker and have maintained a log of all maintenance. Call Dave at 402-488-9625 to see the car. I can email pictures as needed. A few on posted on Craigslist.
