Just got the car from VA with a VA title as a 1938 chevrolet 2D SDN VIN 9HAD619660. I am trying title and register the car in CA. CA DMV could not find VIN on car body CHP could not find the VIN. The car has the original frame and body the drive train is not original. Any ideas where the VIN could be and is the VIN on the VA title the right sequence of numbers and letters for that year? HELP!!

The serial number you show is a 1938 number except I believe it should read 9HA06 19660 which breaks down as follows:

9 = Norwood, Ohio Assemby plant
HA = designation for 1938 Master Delux Passenger
06 = June, 1938 Assembly date
19606 = sequence number with the first unit built having sequence number 1001. Yours is the 18606 such unit assembled at Norwood for 1938.

The Serial data plate for 1938 passenger cars should be located under the right side hood panel and is attached to the outer vertical surface of the cowl panel.

The rt outer vertical side of cowl has a tag that has the paint number and stuff but no VIN. It looks like there are 2 small holes right above that where the VIN tag may have been attached however it is gone. Is there another location on the frame or body that would show the VIN?

There is no serial number stamped on the frame. The only place the car has the serial number is on the serial data plate. \:\( \:\( \:\(

There would be a mfg. date stamped on the inside of frame rail near motor. This would confirm year of car.

The Filling Station sells both M and MD data plates if they are in stock. You'll have to stamp your own numbers. The first five characters take 3/16" stamps and the unit number takes 1/8" stamps I believe. Yes, the two holes are the correct location for the plate. Originally there would have been two very small clutch/hex head screws holding it in place.
