The air cleaner is painted black. On the semi-gloss terminology, that is kinda sorta a misnomer. Back in 1931 the parts painted black were either dipped in or sprayed with black Japan enamel. The finish of black Japan enamel is glossy, but not a high gloss as it would look cut and buffed. Today, some dudes refer to that as a semi-gloss finish. Since actual semi-gloss paint does have a different type of appearance than the old black Japan enamel, I like to relate that the finish is a dull gloss and not a high gloss with a deep reflection. Things like the brake and clutch pedals, the mast jacket, frame, axles, springs, brake shafts and etc. were all painted black.
